Beginning in September, po- lice forces in the GTA began in- vestigating an increase in test drive thefts occurring at local dealerships. Police said the suspects in these thefts used fraudulent identifications and -- in many cases -- took advantage of cur- rent COVID-19 precautions to secure unescorted test drives and steal vehicles. In some cases, officers al- lege, when the test drive was es- corted by a sales representa- tive, a staged collision was or- chestrated in order to complete the theft. The targets of these thefts were primarily Mercedes prod- ucts. Members of the Halton Po- lice Oakville Criminal Investi- gation Bureau in collaboration with the Peel Regional Police and Hamilton Police Service began to investigate a series of thefts reported in Halton, Peel, Hamilton and South Simcoe. The investigation was fur- ther supported by the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Coun- cil. On Nov. 28, members of the Peel police arrested two sus- pects they allege were in pos- session of a stolen vehicle. Subsequent search warrants were executed by members of the Halton Police Oakville Criminal Investigation Bureau at two Brampton residences and on one vehicle. Investigators seized a sec- ond vehicle, which they said had been reported stolen from an Oakville dealership, and ap- proximately 450 grams of fenta- nyl, 45 grams of crack cocaine, a quantity of suspected Xanax tablets and approximately $10,000. An 18-year-old Brampton man has been charged with three counts of motor vehicle theft and possession of false identity documents. A 20-year-old Mississauga man is charged with eight counts of motor vehicle theft, eight counts of uttering a forged document, possession of false identity documents and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Prior to these arrests, in Oc- tober Halton police investiga- tors executed a warrant at a residence in Toronto and seized: • a Mercedes that had been reported stolen from Hamilton • stolen Ontario dealer plates • fraudulent Ontario and Quebec Driver's licences • Approximately $3,000. A 23-year-old man from To- ronto was arrested and charged with possession of property ob- tained by crime over $5,000, two counts of possession of proper- ty obtained by crime under $5,000, tampering with a Vehi- cle Identification Number, and four counts of possession of false identity documents.
