Another well-known and well- liked Oakville restaurant has closed down in the midst of the CO- VID-19 pandemic. Tavolo Pizza Pasta Wine restau- rant, part of the Catch Hospitality group of restaurants, has an- nounced that it is forever closing. "After eight months of being shuttered, I am heartbroken to an- nounce that we have made the dif- ficult decision to closes Tavolo Piz- za Pasta Wine permanently," Catch president Doug Greco said in an letter Friday, Nov. 27. "Unfor- tunately, this is the only choice we are left with. I want to assure you that this decision did not come easy and I want you all to know that there have been many sleep- less nights trying to find a way through this mess." The eatery's menu had a strong focus on southern Italian cuisine and offered an array of pizza and pasta dishes, in addition to hearty risottos along with meat and fish plates. Greco said in a letter to patrons that when the restaurant opened in 2013 at South Oakville Centre, formerly known as Hopedale Mall, they were assured the mall would be fully occupied with strong an- chor tenants. There is now a plan before Town of Oakville Council to turn part of the mall into residential de- velopment. With Halton region in the Red Zone of the COVID-19 framework -- meaning only 10 people can dine in at a time -- Greco said "there is no way with the square footage of Tavolo that we can sustain these types of restrictions." Greco thanked Tavolo staff and patrons for making the last seven years memorable. Several devoted Tavolo patrons were stunned with the news. "Very sad but understandable. We absolutely loved having a won- derful 'walk to' restaurant in our neighbourhood," Gail Hannigan said in a Facebook post. "You will be sorely missed." Greco said Catch will continue to offer Tavolo dishes, as well as other menu items on Catch's wide array of restaurants, on Skip The Dishes. Metroland file photo BUSINESS POPULAR LOCAL RESTAURANT CLOSES DOWN Suncor will be moving its Oakville and Mississauga Petro- Canada head offices to Calgary. The Canadian energy compa- ny, which is based in Calgary, confirmed the move on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Suncor Energy spokesperson Sneh Seetal said the decision will impact 700 employees working in Oakville and Mississauga. She said these employees were informed on Monday, Oct. 26. "This decision supports some work that Suncor has been doing for a period of time to ensure we remain competitive for the long term," said Seetal. "We do see an opportunity for our downstream business to be- come more efficient and effective and integrated and better con- nected with the rest of Suncor." The impacted employees are described as sales, logistics, hu- man resources, communications and finance staff who support the company's Petro-Canada brand. The move is expected to take place over the course of 2021. It is unclear at this time how many of the 700 employees will actually follow their jobs to Cal- gary. "It was really important that we share the information with employees first because we know that this transition has an impact on people and families and in some cases, people may decide to not come to Calgary," said Seetal. "People may make different choices that are better for their families and we understand that." Seetal said Suncor still wants to maintain a regional office in Ontario, however, at this time it is unclear where that office will be or how many people will re- main there.
