C O M   Residents in parts of south- central Oakville can expect to see town staff pruning trees near hy- dro lines starting this month. The Town of Oakville and its tree service contractor will per- form hydro line clearing from Chartwell Road to Fourth Line and Westdale Road, and from the QEW to Lake Ontario. Town staff said trees are pruned on a four-year cycle fol- lowing the Electrical Safety Au- thority's industry standard of providing a minimum three-me- tre clearance between branches and primary power lines and a one-metre clearance between branches and secondary lines. Crews will also prune trees to provide clearance from hydro poles and guy lines. Town staff said if not properly maintained, trees can create power outages or hazardous situ- ations by touching or even falling on hydro lines. They noted in rare instances, trees growing too close to a hydro line will be removed if the arbor- ist cannot balance the clearance standard with acceptable prun- ing standards. In some instances, the town must prune privately owned trees if they have grown too close to the hydro line. Town staff also said that when hydro lines are located in rear yards, Oakville Hydro has an easement through the property, which allows the arborist to ac- cess the tree. The town's arborist contrac- tors prune trees with several goals in mind, including: • keeping the structural integ- rity of the tree intact • maintaining the health of the tree with well-placed cuts that heal well and minimize sprout- ing • promoting regrowth away from hydro lines through direc- tional pruning • leaving branches growing down and away from wires to continue their growth For more information visit www.oakvillehydro.com/my- home/general/tree-trimming- faq.html.
