Gilbert will be sadly missed by all those whose lives he has touched with his involvement in many charitable causes in the Caledonia and Oakville communities including St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Senior Support Services, Meals on Wheels, Knights of Columbus and St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church. Following his service to the Royal Netherlands Army Gilbert boarded a ship bound for Canada and soon began his love for travelling throughout Canada. Shortly after he arrived, he made a trip across the country and spent time working in the cherry orchards of the Okanagan Valley. Wanting to share this new adventure with someone special, he headed back to Holland where he convinced Thea to join him. And so began many summers camping all across this great country. Married in 1963 for nearly 40 years, Gilbert placed his spouse, family and church at the centre of his life. He never forgot his agricultural roots, and annually filled most of the family backyard with all sorts of fruits and vegetables, including his beloved pota- toes. Gilbert's social lifestyle made him many new friends in Oakville and Caledonia. He was active in lawn bowling, bowling, aquafit and was always up for a good card game anytime, anywhere. He loved to travel and if there was music and a dance floor, or really not even a dance floor, he would be dancing. Recently, you could regularly find him strutting his stuff at the Legion with his dance partner Chantal LeGallais at his side. He could often be found walking the neighbor- hood meeting new people or just saying hello to friends. Special thanks to the doctors and extraordinary nurses in the ICU at Norfolk General Hospital for their compassion and dedication. Visitation will be held in the MILLER FUNERAL CHAPEL, 28 Caithness St. E., Caledonia, on Sunday, February 21, 2021 from 2-5 p.m. A private family funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Caledonia on Friday, February 26, 2021. Interment at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery in Oakville will occur in the spring. In lieu of flowers, those who wish can donate to Pancreatic Cancer Canada. While based in Timmins, his many years working in the gold fields of Northern Ontario led to numerous long-lasting friend- ships. Hermann's career allowed him to see all of Canada and spend his time outdoors, both of which he loved. He will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the staff at Northridge LTC for providing such great care, and the staff in the palliative care unit at the Oakville hospital.
