A Halton Regional Po- lice officer is facing crimi- nal charges after a video surfaced of a police officer getting physical with a male in an Oakville park- ing lot. The video was shared widely on social media last spring after the incident was captured on video in the Little Caesars Pizza and Bank of Montreal plaza at Third Line and Dundas Street West. Halton police now say Halton officers responded to that area April 20 for re- ports of a male loitering in the area. The video appears to show an officer pushing and shoving a male, at one point using what appears to be the male's bag to do so. "An interaction ensued between the officers and the male," police said The officer who made di- rect physical contact with the male was suspended from duty with pay, which is the only option available to a police service as pre- scribed by the Police Ser- vices Act (PSA), according to a police news release is- sued Feb. 16. To ensure transparency, police said, Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner asked the Waterloo Region- al Police Service to investi- gate the incident. Const. Jason Mathers has been charged with as- sault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000. He has been released and is scheduled to appear (virtually) in court on March 9. He remains sus- pended with pay. The other three officers who were at the scene were reassigned to administra- tive positions pending the outcome of the investiga- tion by Waterloo police An internal disciplinary investigation into the ac- tions of all four officers un- der Part V of the PSA is on- going. "We recognize that the actions of our officers at this incident have the po- tential to undermine public trust in our Service, and in policing as a whole. We re- main committed to foster- ing and maintaining a very positive relationship with the community we serve," Tanner said in a statement. "It is of paramount impor- tance that any investiga- tion into the actions of a po- lice officer is not only thor- ough, but also unbiased, transparent and fair. We are grateful for the assis- tance of the Waterloo Re- gional Police Service in this matter and for their inves- tigation into this incident." Other community lead- ers spoke out about the in- cident after the video was made public. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said the treatment of the youth by the officer "does not fit the standards" of the Halton Police. "I deplore the unprofes- sional and undisciplined behaviour displayed in the video," he said in a tweet.
