Charles Wu, who has lived in southeast Oakville since 2018, says problems began on June 4 when he and his wife passed a group of teenagers during an af- ter-dinner stroll. "We got to our driveway and my son, who was in the house, called me and said, 'Dad, somebody's following you,'" said Wu. "I turned around and I found that one of these guys was following us. I asked him what he was doing, and he ran away." Wu said not long after this incident, a lawn sign he erected to celebrate his son's graduation from high school was stolen. A few days after that, at around 11:30 p.m. on June 11, Wu said a group of teens showed up in front of his home. "They stayed there for al- most half an hour. They made a lot of noise and then they left," said Wu. The Oakville man said the incidents continued on the evening of June 18 when a group of six or seven teens pelted his home with eggs. The following evening, Wu said, two teens began approaching his house, but fled when Wu's son spotted them and yelled. "They yelled back some very bad words about Chi- nese people," said Wu. On June 21 Wu took to Twitter to raise awareness of what his family has had to go through and demand action. "I have 3 kids, they are all scared and cannot go to sleep," he tweeted. Halton Police media re- lations officer Const. Ryan Anderson said police have been made aware of these incidents and are investi- gating. He said officers are also investigating the possibility that these are hate-motivat- ed incidents. "There is evidence that these offences may be moti- vated in whole, or in part, by hate and/or bias, and as such, we are applying all available resources to iden- tify the suspects involved," said Anderson. "The Halton Regional Police Service takes these incidents extremely seri- ously. Both uniform patrol units and our Criminal In- vestigations Bureau are treating this investigation as a top priority and are working in collaboration with our Regional Commu- nity Mobilization Bureau and Victim Support Unit." Mayor Rob Burton also reached out to Wu through social media. "We will follow up and are here to help you and your family in any way we can," Burton wrote. Wu said that since he spoke up, he has heard from neighbours of Asian de- scent who say they experi- enced similar harassment in recent months. Most of these incidents were not reported to police, said Wu. He said residents need to speak up when they are subjected to these types of crimes and called on po- lice, the government and the community to stop these crimes and make this society safe and peaceful.
