Debbie Wang and Swayam Parekh topped a field of approximately 60 teams from across the country. The students qualified for nationals by placing third in the Ontario junior championship. "To say the least, this is a major accom- plishment for Debbie and Swayam, in what is their first year of high school debate," said Hamish Guthrie, retired Halton Dis- trict School Board English teacher who served as a weekly volunteer coach and judge. "Competition at nationals is keen and strenuous." Teams consist of two debaters who each speak for six minutes with a concluding re- buttal of three minutes each. The topic for the finals was: This House would consider senior politicians under oath when making public statements on political issues, thus making them crimi- nally liable for perjury if they lie. The championship was conducted on- line by the Canadian Student Debating Federation and hosted by St. John's-Ra- venscourt School in Winnipeg.
