Flynn is not always sure what he has once he pulls it from the ground, but said doing the re- search to solve the mys- tery is one of the most en- joyable aspects of the hob- by. Flynn has been search- ing out buried treasures for six years since he stumbled across a You- Tube video. He went to Ca- nadian Tire and bought a cheap detector. He said that you can now get a de- tector "with all the bells and whistles" for about $350. He said it can be frus- trating at first until you learn to differentiate the sounds and readings, al- lowing you tell the differ- ence between a pop can tab and a coin without having to dig. There is one thing Flynn enjoys more than a historical find, and that's being able to return some- thing. Once at the George- town Fairgrounds, he got a strong signal at the base of an old maple tree. After digging down about six inches, he discovered a plaque with a name and a year of birth and death. After posting it on Face- book, he received a mes- sage from the person's granddaughter. The fami- ly assumed the plaque had been stolen and were thrilled to discover it was still there. They held a re- dedication ceremony that Easter. "Those are the ones that make you feel good," Flynn said. Anyone interested in following Flynn's finds can visit his YouTube channel, Digging Halton.
