An area resident discov- ered the offensive vandal- ism -- which included a swastika and the names of Holocaust victim Anne Frank and disgraced come- dian Bill Cosby spray painted on a parking spot -- on August 19 at Post Park on Macdonald Road. When contacted by insi- dehalton.com, Halton po- lice spokesperson Steve Elms said there had not been any reports of the inci- dent, but that an officer would be investigating. "I would strongly urge residents to contact us if they observe incidents of vandalism such as this," he added. Elms assured the public that Halton police will "rig- orously investigate hate- motivated incidents as we firmly believe that hate has no place in our communi- ty." Mayor Rob Burton ech- oed those sentiments, call- ing the act "deplorable." "I condemn this act of racism. Oakville has a long history of mutual respect for all races amongst our citizens. We strive for har- mony in our community." Burton called on all resi- dents "to be vigilant and re- port any acts of racism or hatred in our community to the Halton Police." Spokesperson for the Town of Oakville Jill Ma- cInnes says that "offensive and racial graffiti is a high priority for the town and it is aimed to be removed within 24 hours." The pub- lic can call ServiceOakville at 905 845 6601 if they find such vandalism in Oakville. Halton Police's 2020 An- nual Report says that hated- motivated crimes "rose by a staggering 160 per cent in 2020 when compared to the previous year." RACIST GRAFFITI FOUND AT PARK MANSOOR TANWEER mtanweer@metroland.com Racist graffiti was found at Post Park last week. Mansoor Tanweer/Metroland Halton police have is- sued a "public safety warning" after some trou- bling incidents in Oak- ville. The latest incident oc- curred around 10 p.m. on Aug. 19, when a man alleg- edly exposed himself to a female on a residential street in the area of Golden Briar Trail and Glenash- ton Drive (Eighth Line and Upper Middle Road area). The woman found a place of safety and report- ed the incident to police, officers said, adding the man was unknown to her and there was no verbal in- teraction. Two days earlier, on Aug. 17 at around 6:30 p.m., a woman was walking along the Morrison Creek Trail system in the area of Ravineview Way (Eighth Line and Upper Middle Road area) when a man (believed to be the same man) allegedly exposed himself as she walked past. He then changed direc- tion and began following her. She fled the area to a place of safety and report- ed the incident to police. An investigation of both incidents is being un- dertaken by the force's Criminal Investigations Bureau, including a can- vas of the local area, ob- taining victim statements and collecting and analyz- ing CCTV footage. The suspect is de- scribed as being black with long black hair, aged 20-27 , about 5-foot-7 to 6- feet with a thin build, wearing a hooded shirt and dark shorts in both in- cidents "Anyone who encoun- ters this individual or who has a similar experience is asked to leave the area im- mediately, go to a place of safety, and call 9-1-1," po- lice said in a news release. Anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage in the ar- eas on the evenings in question or with informa- tion about the incidents is asked to call police at 905- 825-4747 or Crime Stop- pers at 1-800-222-8477.
