An Acton couple is chal- lenging residents and busi- nesses across Halton to step up and help communi- ty charities that are strug- gling through the pandem- ic. Andrew and Margaret Wilkinson recently donat- ed $10,000 to one of their fa- vourite not-for-profit orga- nizations, Georgetown Lit- tle Theatre (GLT). Now, the local pair is hoping their action will inspire others to do the same. "I want to challenge business owners and mem- bers of the community alike to show support to lo- cal charities or cultural hubs that are facing finan- cial difficulties during CO- VID-19," said Andrew. "I hope this (challenge) makes a splash, and those who are able to donate make the choice to do so." While some government funding is available for or- ganizations that are feeling the pinch of the pandemic, the Acton man said it's not realistic to rely on this as- sistance alone. "We have to support our community," he noted. With GLT's main perfor- mance space, the John El- liott Theatre, closed for the foreseeable future, the per- forming arts group is now exploring new ways to en- gage with its members and audience. Across Ontario, com- munity theatres are expe- riencing financial difficul- ties due to the pandemic, with some groups even closing their doors perma- nently. GLT president Da- vid Borgal said the support from the Wilkinsons and others "inspires our group to move forward and adapt to modern challenges." The GLT's upcoming (currently postponed) sea- son will mark its 60th year of creating theatrical per- formances for Halton Hills residents.
