7 | O akville B eaver | T hursday,S eptem ber 9,2021 insidehalton.com Are you a Canadian citi- zen, 18 years or older, looking to have your say in shaping the country's polit- ical future by casting your vote in September's federal election? Then don't let that all- important democratic op- portunity go to waste by in- advertently being left off the voters' list. While every citizen eli- gible to vote should be au- tomatically added to Elec- tion Canada's permanent voter register, the National Register of Electors, it is possible to be left off the list if you've just become eligi- ble to vote, if you've moved or if you've changed your name. Worried you won't get your chance to exercise your democratic rights? Don't panic. Elections Can- ada makes it easy to regis- ter to vote, to check wheth- er your voter registration information is current, and if it's not, to update your in- formation. Ensuring you're proper- ly registered to vote and registered in your local poll riding ahead of time is far easier than trying to register at the polling sta- tion on election day, say Elections Canada officials. Want to check if you're on the voters' list and, if you're not, find out how to get added to the list? Visit Elections Canada at www.elections.ca. To check your registra- tion status online, visit How to Register to Vote sec- tion of the website, and type in your name, home address and date of birth. The online system will let you know if you're regis- tered at your current ad- dress, and if you're not, will provide steps on how to up- date your information. Register online: If you're not registered to vote, Elec- tions Canada allows you to register online, but have your driver's licence or provincial/territorial ID card on hand to confirm your identity. Register by mail: If on- line registration is not available or not preferred, citizens can call 1-800-463- 6868 to request a voter reg- istration form be sent to them via mail, email or fax. The completed forms can be mailed to Elections Can- ada, also with photocopies of proof of identity and ad- dress. Note: Accepted forms of proof of identity and ad- dress include photocopies of a driver's licence, health card or phone bill. Local elections office: Elections Canada also gives residents an opportu- nity to register or check if they're properly registered at local elections offices. Once the election is called, residents can visit www.e- lections.ca or call 1-800-463- 6868 to find out how to con- tact their local Elections Canada office. Tax return option: A simple way to register or update voter registration information is to check the Election Canada boxes on your tax return every year. Checking the box authoriz- es Canada Revenue to share name, address, date of birth and citizenship in- formation with the nation- al register of voters. Once voter registration is confirmed, voters will re- ceive a voter information card in the mail after the election is called. The card will provide information on where and when to vote. In order to register to vote or to update personal information ahead of time, Elections Canada will have to receive new and updated registrations -- via online or mail -- by 6 p.m. on the Tuesday before the elec- tion. Those who miss that deadline can still register at polling stations, but will need to show accepted forms of proof of identity and address (such as a driv- er's licence, health card or two pieces of identification including utility bills and credit card statement). Note: Even voters who have a voter information card must still show proof of identification that matches information in the Elections Canada's perma- nent voter register. Over the course of this health crisis, I have worked hard to ensure that our country has the necessary PPE, Rapid Tests and COVID-19 Vaccines required to get us to the other side of this pandemic. The support that Oakville residents have shown one another during this crisis has been truly inspirational, but there is still much work to do. Together, I know that we will overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope to continue to serve the citizens of Oakville and Canada as we work to strengthen our economy and further address the global climate crisis. On September 20th, I am asking for your renewed support so that we can finish the work that we started andmove our community and country forward together. 289-351-3060
