13 | O akville B eaver | T hursday,O ctober 7,2021 insidehalton.com With the Sept. 30 Na- tional Truth and Reconcil- iation Day holiday fast ap- proaching and the linger- ing sorrow of hundreds of unmarked graves found on residential school sites, Hazel Garde is even more determined to ramp up her initiative. It was last year, as the 24-year-old prepared to start her own school year -- the fifth of a French bachelor of education pro- gram -- that she thought of the financial burden for many in remote communi- ties. In an effort to help some of those disadvan- taged northern areas in Canada, she launched Northern Supplies for Success, a project to buy and forward school sup- plies and feminine hy- giene products. To date, she has raised $4,000 and sent 25 large boxes and more than 100 smaller boxes of pur- chased and donated school supplies, feminine hy- giene products and winter clothing to Cambridge Bay and Kugaaruk, Nunavut, as well as Tataskweyak First Nation in Manitoba and Buffalo Narrows, Wol- laston Lake and Beauval in Saskatchewan. "Recently, I heard the devastating news that Ta- taskweyak First Nation has been put under a state of emergency because they have lost nine youth and four adults to suicide in the last 14 months, and four in the past two months," said Garde, who has decided to use the re- mainder of her current funds to purchase supplies for Tataskweyak Cree Na- tion. Garde is specifically looking for monetary do- nations due to space limi- tations. Donations will go toward the purchase of hy- giene products such as shampoo, soap, deodor- ant, toothpaste, pads, school supplies and healthy packaged snacks. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so by going to https://true- northaid.ca/northern- supplies-for-success. Garde has been partic- ularly inspired by Rylee Nepinak, a young man from the Tataskweyak First Nation who is cycling across Canada to raise awareness and money for his community. "I plan to continue Northern Supplies for Success as long as I have funds to keep it running ..." said Garde. Due to space limitations, Hazel Garde is currently accepting monetary donations to help her support northern Indigenous communities. There are important optional benefits that you may be missing out on. Many people are unaware that you can purchase optional coverage which entitles you to higher limits for accident benefits. Specifically, every auto insurer must offer optional enhanced coverage in the following categories: • Income replacement benefits; • Caregiver, housekeeping and home maintenance benefits; • Medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits; • Death and funeral benefits; • Dependant care benefits; and • Indexation benefits. If you're seriously injured in car accident, the costs of treatment and rehabilitation services needed to recover stack up quickly. As such, the appeal of this enhanced coverage becomes obvious given the rising costs of living and costs of care. These optional benefits offer a much larger pool of insurance money that you can access. For instance, the statutory maximum you can receive for standard income replacement benefits is currently $400 per week. If you purchase optional income replacement benefits, however, you can receive an increased maximum weekly amount of $600, $800 or $1,000 per week based on the option you select. There are also various optional benefits for medical, rehabilitation and attendant care which dramatically increase the standard policy limits. You should immediately review your auto policy and consider whether this enhanced coverage would be right for you. In the unfortunate event of a motor vehicle accident, don't be caught without adequate coverage. − ADVERTORIAL − Taran Hoogsteen Personal Injury Lawyer thoogsteen@rossmcbride.com 905.526.9800 www.rossmcbride.com
