Out of 700 applicants from across the country, 16 recipients were chosen for the prestigious award based on their courage and determination in aca- demics, athletics and civic life. Each has faced chal- lenges that have shaped their view of the world and motivated them to help others in their communi- ties. Here are four things to know about Julia Sey- mour of Oakville and Bur- lington's Sarah Howe. JULIA SEYMOUR 1.) Julia is an advocate for mental health and helped launch the Youth Forum, a mental health pilot program at her school. She also co-hosts the podcast "Youth Pod," sparking conversation about mental health, self- esteem and healthy rela- tionships. 2.) "From a young age, my ultimate goal has been to leave the world a better place than I found it," she said. 3.) Julia volunteers at the local women's shelter, the Acclaim Health Se- niors Day program and with students with disa- bilities as part of the Best Buddies program. 4.) She hopes to study medicine. SARAH HOWE 1.) A traumatic child- hood left Sarah deter- mined to protect other kids. "I strive to look out for those who might be ex- periencing similar obsta- cles," said Sarah. 2.) Passionate about providing a safe space for kids, Sarah mentors chil- dren as a YoungLife leader and coaches youth at her local hockey club. 3.) Sarah has raised funds for the Mission Ser- vices women's shelter and Relay for Life, and her fundraiser for kids bat- tling cancer raised over $10,000 for the Pediatric Oncology Group of Onta- rio. 4.) Sarah has applied to the nursing program at Queen's University, hop- ing to work in pediatrics.
