MANSOOR TANWEER mtanweer@metroland.com On a hot Wednesday morning, several children gathered at the Ellis Avenue Boys and Girls Club (BGC) Hamilton-Halton building to receive a gift. Each of the chosen chil- dren received a free bicycle, a helmet and several other goodies. "Our staff did a very, very good job, a thorough job, of picking out families and kids that needed a bike," said Glenn Harkness, exec- utive director of BGC Ham- ilton-Halton. "These fami- lies otherwise couldn't go out and purchase a bike -- these kids deserve a bike." The youth are members of BGC's programs. They all came from underprivileged backgrounds which, ac- cording to Harkness, "could be lacking financial re- sources" after paying rent, hydro and buying grocer- ies." The proceeds from a charity event called Greg's Cycle for Kids (GCK) went toward purchasing the bikes. The inaugural GCK took place in September 2020, and it was in honour of OPP Sgt. Greg Stobbart who was killed in 2006, hit by a driver while he was cycling. "Greg was killed in June of 2006. Shortly thereafter we started looking at what we can do to memorialize him and to keep his memory alive," said his widow, and former Burlington MPP, El- eanor McMahon. "I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to transform that loss of life in- to something powerful," she added. BGC Hamilton-Hal- ton also has offices in Oak- ville and Burlington.
