Among the reasons, Meghani said that CO- VID-19 incidence rates have trended higher among those under 20 this fall. "This represents hun- dreds of COVID-19 cases among Halton children just in the past few months," she said. While most children have milder symptoms compared to adults, she not- ed that it's difficult to pre- dict who may experience more severe symptoms and become seriously ill. There are more than 50,000 unvac- cinated children aged 5 to 11, according to Meghani. Citing recent data, she said the risk of getting CO- VID-19 was seven times higher among those unvac- cinated and the risk of being hospitalized was 24 times higher in comparison to vaccinated people. "Vaccination can help prevent or reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community," she said. As for the weekly COVID-19 cases, the region's website shows that from Nov. 19 to 25 there were 150 new cases, up from 114 the previous week. One new death was reported in Milton. As of Nov. 26, the num- ber of active COVID-19 cases stood at 134 -- with 60 cases in Burlington, 40 in Oak- ville, 26 in Milton, and eight in Halton Hills. There have been 20,343 cases of CO- VID-19 during the pandem- ic, with 19,965 marked as re- solved and 244 deaths.
