"Thorns kind of resonated with the strug- gles we were going through at the time." Rai- na won third place for that. "I was never a biology kind of person. My dad wanted me to be a doctor," she said. I didn't have any passion for biology." After graduating with a biology degree, she answered a job ad for a designer. She was reasonably successful at this work, getting numer- ous orders from the Japa- nese market. One day, someone she knew asked her for help with preparing his portfo- lio. When he got into a good fashion school with the portfolio she helped him with, she realized that "if I can do it for somebody else, I can do it for myself too." Before long, London called. She got accepted in- to the London College of Fashion (University of the Arts) in London England. After overcoming the initial culture shock of go- ing from India to the U.K., where she says she almost had a "nervous break- down," she took to her studies like a fish to water. "After the first semester, I started getting merits and distinctions." She added: "I was learn- ing a lot, like I was like a sponge. I was absorbing a lot." Her husband, Gaurav, would follow her to Paris, where he would propose to her under the Eiffel Tower. After they got married, they stayed in India for a few years. They ran a tex- tile company. "We were so inexperience, and we had our first child, and we didn't quite handle it well, the finances part and ev- erything." They wound down the company and moved to Canada in 2004. After four years of being a stay-at- home mom, she got into Sheridan College's textiles program. She opened her busi- ness, Anu Raina Design Inc., in 2010, a year before graduating. She made a name for herself in the fashion-show circuit, even at one point getting the at- tention of Robin Kay, founder of Toronto Fash- ion Week. "Robin was very kind to wave off my run- way fees." To open her shop in Oakville, she initially tried to open on Kerr Street, but ultimately moved to her current Lakeshore Road East store for better foot traffic and exposure.
