Unifor Local 1256 President Alice Kelly announced the break- through on Monday (Feb. 28) -- day 11 of the Oakville Transit strike -- noting the union had reached out to the Town to move the matter forward. The Town confirmed the meet- ing has been scheduled and staff said the Town looked forward to reaching a resolution that will get transit back in service The 179 Oakville Transit oper- ators and maintenance workers have been on strike since Feb. 17. Regular bus service in Oak- ville has been suspended since that time. On Monday, Unifor 1256 pick- eters could be seen in front of the Transit Facility at 430 Wyecroft Rd. Kelly said she was surprised it had taken this long to get talks go- ing again. "We were just hoping we would have had a quicker re- solve, but now that's not impor- tant," she said. "What's important is that we are ready to talk and they are ready to talk and we can get these drivers back on the road to service the public." Union members are seeking wage increases that reflect infla- tion, additional sick days and bet- ter language for casual workers. The Town's collective agree- ment with Unifor Local 1256 ex- pired on Jan. 31. Bargaining teams reportedly reached a tentative settlement on Feb. 8, but union members reject- ed it in a ratification vote on Feb. 13. "This isn't just about money. This is about work/life balance and working conditions," said Kelly. It is unclear how long bargain- ing talks will last or when resi- dents can expect the restoration of transit services. Town staff said Oakville Tran- sit's specialized care-A-van ser- vice continues to operate for medical trips only with dialysis appointments given first priority. Given current staffing re- quirements and resources at this time, Oakville Transit cannot guarantee same-day trips for medical appointments (other than dialysis) and will work with customers to find a time that works best for them. Customers may contact 905- 337-9222 to book a trip.
