The motion was brought forward by Ukrainian Ca- nadian and Ward 6 Coun. Natalia Lishchyna, who said she still has family in the eastern European country. Russia launched a full- scale invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, Feb. 24. "As I am speaking to this motion right now, my fami- ly members and millions of innocent Ukrainians are taking cover in basements and bomb shelters in their homeland," said Lishchyna on Monday night. The Ward 6 councillor called the attack unpro- voked and unjustified and noted that Oakville has a large Ukrainian popula- tion, many of whom still have family and friends in Ukraine. She called on council to support the right of the Ukrainian people to live in a peaceful sovereign coun- try. Lishchyna also asked councillors to support the economic sanctions Cana- da has imposed on Russia, the lethal and non-lethal aid Canada is giving to Ukraine and the humani- tarian aid both the federal and provincial govern- ments are delivering. She further called on council to request the fed- eral and provincial govern- ments welcome Ukraini- ans fleeing the war into Canada and Ontario at an accelerated pace. "The Ukrainian army is brave and courageous, and the civilians have joined in throughout Ukraine to help," said Lishchyna. "I have no doubt it will continue to stay a free and democratic country." The motion was second- ed by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and was well re- ceived by Lishchyna's council colleagues. Ward 6 Coun. Tom Ad- ams said he was horrified by the news of the invasion. "My heart is with every member of the Ukrainian community, whether they are in Ukraine or in Cana- da or in some other coun- try," said Adams. "Watching your country be destroyed in the way it is being destroyed is shock- ing ... I can only say I am sorry to see what's going on." Ward 4 Coun. Allan El- gar said if Ukraine falls, the Baltic states will be next targets of Russian President Vladimir Putin. "This man has to be stopped," he said. Lishchyna said the hu- manitarian crisis in Ukraine is getting worse every day.
