Town staff said that on Feb. 24, Metrolinx in- formed them that costs for the Burloak Grade Separa- tion project had risen from an initial estimate of $60 million to $177.3 million and that the Town of Oak- ville and the City of Bur- lington will need to pay half of the costs. That works out to $45 million each, instead of the $15 million each that was previously quoted. Staff were also told by Metrolinx that costs for the Kerr Street Grade Separa- tion project had risen more than $100 million to $234 million and that Metrolinx had decided to indefinitely defer the project until "con- struction costs fall." In council's motion, Oak- ville Mayor Rob Burton and chief administrative officer Jane Clohecy called Metro- linx's expectations that the municipalities cover the in- creased Burloak project costs "unrealistic and fiscal- ly irresponsible." They also chastised Metrolinx for a lack of transparency during the procurement process for the projects and for the substantial delays in mov- ing these projects forward. "The decision made by Metrolinx has great impact on our transportation plans and really sets us back dramatically," said Chisholm, speaking to the Kerr Street project. "My biggest concern is when is this going to hap- pen? Because there is no date or timeline. It was sup- posed to start this year and unfortunately it is not go- ing to happen." Chisholm went on to note that the town has al- ready spent $6.9 million on prep work around the Kerr Street crossing in anticipa- tion of the underpass being built. Ward 1 Coun. Beth Robertson said Burloak Drive is a key corridor be- tween Burlington and Oak- ville and noted the under- pass must be completed. "It's a key corridor as the Wyecroft Bridge is going to be completed and because Bronte, like Kerr Village, is a growth hub, we have more and more develop- ment and Bronte Road just can't absorb that number of cars," said Robertson. "This is such a needed access to get through. So, we need that piece to get to- gether and we need it not to take until 2027." The situation is expec- ted to get worse when the electrification of the Lake- shore West GO line and the introduction of 15-minute, all-day service results in greater train traffic in 2025. A similar motion calling for the province to take ac- tion on these two projects was approved unanimous- ly by Halton Regional council on March 23.
