Morrison "Hello, there," Frank Strana- han called to me over the heads of autograph hounds packed around him at the Riviera course during the recent U.S. Open. It was the first time I had seen Frank since his appearance at the Los Angeles Open last January. At that time I made several pictures of his swing during prac- tice and actual play. When I gave him some of these snap- shots he asked my advice about eliminating some of the awkward positions and movements which caused him to loop the club in both: backswing and downswing. This looping, to a great extent, accounted for his inconsistent scoring. He suggested a return to Los Angeles, at a later date, for a more thorough analysis of his swing and instructions about eliminating faults. : He "didn't return, and I didn't hear from him again until he hail- ed me in the crowd at Riviera. "I'm glad to have this oppor- tunity to tell you that I finally caught up with some of your teachings," he said. "A few weeks before the British Amateur 1 spent some time with Henry Picard. Henry always has been very kind to me, and he explained such things as foot action, body. balance and head position in terms. I readily understood. He showed me how these essentials affect the flight of the ball." With mounting enthusiasm, h continued: "I got to hitting the ball so well that I went right out and won the Delaware Open. Then I went to England, where I found rough weather and playing conditions quite different from those in America. The wind, es- pecially, forced me to comprom- ise a little on Picard's instruc- tions, but I'm convinced that the principle is right and worth work- ing for."
