Christianson, Jr. So far as is known the first Canadian Christmas Seal was is- sued in 1908. This was a national seal but what collectors know as a "local". It was issued by the Muskoka Free Hospital for Consumptives who pioneered this field from 1908 until 1933 after which date they used the national seals. Many other hospitals and san- itoriums at one time or another have issued seals at Christmas- time to help promote their work. Among these are the Toronto Free Hospital for Copsumptives and the Queen Mary Hospital for Consumptive Children at Weston. It was not until after 1926 that National Seals were used exclus- ively with the exception of the Muskoka Hospital Seals until 1933. The designs of the American Seals have been used in Canada, sometimes with a slight change of wording. In 1929, "Health Greetings" replaced "Christmas Greetings", while the next year, "Health to All" was added in the bottom of the stamp, and the red outer frame line was omitted. In 1929, the English text was replaced with a French version reading 'Bone Annee, 1929" and were sent at-New Years. During succeeding years many interesting designs have been used showing various sea- sonable motifs. In each the dou- ble-barred cross of the National T 0 before a screened fireplace and three stockings are hanging from the mantel. For use in Canada the words U.S.A. are omitted from . below' the date. The same design is being used in Great Britain and Bermuda and Newfoundland as well, If you would like to make*an interesting collection of these seals and they will be increased every year. At any rate use many as you can on your lelte this season as they all assist a worthwhile cause. Power and tlephone men haf found an answer to the probled of squirrels that nibble awsy 4 cables. His inspiration for the seal design was a young ne- phew whom he observed await- ing Sanfa Claus before a blazing fire on Christmas eve.
