Probable local record for post season swimming sortees was claimed by youthful Alan Bink- ley, who plunged into -Ontario's frigid waters on Sunday after- noon, December 5. According to the Gazette, scores of promen- ading residents gaped in awe as they saw the enthusiastic swim- mer race along the seawall and dive into the crest of an icy wave, and Commodore N. R. Vinton, busy closing his boathouse for the winter, stood by to offer aid if required. After a brief dip, Alan emerged spluttering and commenced towelling himself vigorously. His only comment: "Gosh, the air's cold!" Manouvering Expert Norman Tomlinson, ace driver for a Burlington firm, captured second prize in the all Canadian truck rodeo held at the C.N.B. grounds last week. Competing in the tractor trailer division, Norm accepted the backwash of only one of the 31 top truckers who journeyed from such distant points as Vancouver and Que- bec to take part. WEEKLY EDITORIAL Working Together One of the finest examples of community spirit is being Shown these days in Acton in the erect- ion of a Boy Scout house on the school grounds. There is being: built a frame building for the local Scout organization with all voluntary labour. The Scouts didn't have enough money to erect a building but it was es- timated they could . with some donations secure the material. Local builders came to the res- cue and voluntary helpers gave of their time on off days and it's surprising what is being accomplished as they work to- gether. With a little more good weather it appears the Scouts will have a roof over their head for the winter and a shelter to meet in. We understand the plan is to complete the work as far as the funds are available. Much will have to be done uy the boys themselves. The part that has been most pleasing is to see men and boys working together in such a pro- ject. With such a spirit in a community it speaks volumes for the future citizens of this community. Incidentally, the newly-elected Reeve and Deputy Reeve and the retiring Deputy- Reeve and several of those who will hold public office next year are among the leaders and workers. -- Free Press.
