"We'd like very seventeen naughty Hanid, "About the whole seventeen of them," said Knarf. "Well," said Mr. Punch, "there isn't time enough to tell you about all of them. But I'll tell you about the naughtiest one of the whole lot. His name, and it's ra- ther an odd name for a rabbit, was Percival--or, as the other sixteen rabbits called him--Percy. Hands Folded "Now Percy," Mr. Punch went on, leaning back in his chair with his hands folded behind his head which he found was always the best possible way for telling stories. "Percy was always think- ing up ways of being naughty. It was easy enough, of course, to think of the usual things such as overfurning ashcans and digging under fences and chasing cats and dogs and doing a great many other naughty things which al- most everybody else has thought about. But Percy wanted to think of something that was: not only naughty but funny, too. I mean, he wanted to make the rest of his brothers and sisters see how very clever he was. So he spent quite a good deal of time sitting in a corner of the Kitch en, thinking and thinking. "One afternoon he was sitting in the corner of the kitchen, thinking as usual and watching his mother go about baking an apple pie when all at once he thought of just the thing to do. It was a kind of naughtiness that he was sure no one else had ever thought of before." "What was it?" Knarf asked. "I'm about to tell you," replied Mr. Punch. "And I don't mind telling it to you because I'm quite sure you'll never be tempt- ed to do the same thing." [This made Knarf and Hanid more anxious than ever to hear | about what Percy did, and they begged Mr. Punch to go on with his story. Nodding and Smiling "So," said Mr. Punch, nodding and smiling, "Percy watched his mother getting the apple pie McConachie & Jones D. A. He decided to get inside the pie and stay hidden there, with the crust over his head, until it was put on the dinner table. Then, when the pie was opened, he was going to pop up like a jack-in-the-box and shout: Boo! This would cer- tainly come as a great surprise and perhaps frighten all his bro- thers and sisters, and quite clear- ly convince them that he was the cleverest rabbit in the family. And also the naughtiest. "No sooner had the idea come to him of 'hiding inside the pie when the phone rang, and Percy's mother hurried into the next room to answer it. The instant she was gone, Percy sprang on the table and squeezed himself into the pie, among all the bits and pieces of apple. Then he pull- ed the crust--or rather the dough that was to be the crust--over his head, and lay there without making a sound until his mother returned. In The Oven "Suddenly Percy's mother fe- turned. And then she did some- thing that Percy hadn't thought about at all. She put the pie in the oven and shut the door! Oh, how Percy regretted being inside that pie! How he baked! How he toasted! How he burned! "And then, when the pie was finally done and Percy was done with it, his mother put on the window-sill to cool. How Percy now froze! He shivered and shook and chaftered. But he couldn't get out'of the pie because the crust was too hard. And then he was put on the table. Gracious! A knife came down and-cut a slice of pie--and cut Percy's tail with it! No, he didn't shout boo! as he leaped out of the pie. He shouted Ow! An& not one of his sisters or brothers thought him clever!" and Repairs Vaulcanizing Qakville Tire & Battery Service Randall at Navy Sts. EMBARRASSED JOAN Joan Crawford and brawny Burt Lancaster have become ac- quainted, finally, but in a most embarrassing manner. It happened at Warners, where, Miss Crawford is starring in a drama called "The Victim," and Mr. Lancaster is swashbuckling his daring way through a techni- color adventure thriller titled "The Hawk and the Arrow." Meeting stars took of the two famous place one' morning this week, when Cliquot, Miss Crawford's pet poodle, escaped from her dressing room and went galloping into Lancaster's, two floors up, with Miss Crawford, of course in hot pursuit. Everything would have been all right except that Joan had only half of her makeup, plus one ancient robe of sentimental value, and Mr. Lancaster was just getting into a pair of tights, part of the medieval wardrobe he wears in the picture. Miss Crawford blushed, and said hello, and went rurfning right back to her own dressing room. Mr. Lancaster chuckled out. loud. It's not a coincidence that Eleanor Parker's character name in "The Rock Bottom" is the same as her own baby daughter, Susan. Originally, she was sup- posed to be known as Lucy, which. she dislikes. She asked for the change. Few film fans know that Steve Cochran, the notable cinema vil- lain now menacing Joan Craw- ford in "The Victim" is a charter member of the New York City's Wolf Club, which he describes as a "benign organization dedicated to the benefit of nice young wo- men who like to have dates with nice young bachelors." Less than a moment after Joan Crawford left her portable dress- ing room at Palm Springs, this week, to do a location scene for "The Victim," a sudden wind storm sent it rolling across the desert end-over-end. She suffered nothing more than some sand in her eyes, as did the rest of the company. Damages were not so slight. Miss Craw- ford lost, by breakage, one fine, full-length mirror and six assort- ed bottles of imported perfume, The essences were gifts from ad- mirers. Guest of the Week If J. B. Lynch, 138 Randall St., will present himself af the box office of the Century theatre any. night next week, he and another guest will be admitted free as guests of the Journal. dos get Church St. W. at Navy Keep a Close Eye on Your Carl You might get caught in a tight spot if you forget to keep your radiator filled with anti-freeze (which evaporates constantly), if you forget to chec tery . . .
