GENERAL ELECTRIC Oil Burners Commercial Refrigeration Sales & Installation Chapter 8 Fooling The Mole 'When we arrived at Owlscroft on the sandy shores of Georgian Bay that lovely August afternoon, the news of Pat new family had arrived before us. Every boy and girl that lived there, or was vis the cottages within half a radius of Owlscroit was on the look- out for us, or I guess I should say the puppies. Johnny Jones and Willie Smith were sitting on a big stone near the turn of the road. They were chewing long stems of summer grass and spinning yarns to while the time away until our car should come in sight along the winding road. Tessie Timpkins and Hettie Hogg were sitting on top of a fence dangling their long. legs over the side and hitting each other with their pig- tails. They didn't know that Johnny. and Willie several hundred yards further down the road and would see the car ahead of them. were Patsy knew we'd arrived. It's enough to jiggle my kidneys into a stew and jar my liver as well." "Hold: tight," I told her, "and we'll have there safely few you in a minutes." "Hold tight? You old loon," she fairly exploded. "Ii I didn't, I'd lose my balance and go plump in the middle of these kids and they'd be a bunch of jelly balls. Oh, woe is me! Never was a poor dog so beset. As if it wasn't bad enough to be saddled with seven hungry kids, now to have my innards fairly shook out from under me!" Two more jiggles and a couple of: big bumps later we arrived at the cottage door. The kids came by the dozen from either Little kids, big kids, fat kids, skinny kids ran at us from all directions. They were all excited and wanted to sce the new puppies. They stood, gawked, they poked, they peered as they crowded around the car. But they all were disappointed. None of them saw the puppies that day I knew the very best thing to do was to get Patsy and the puppies into the cottage as quickly as I could, with as little commotion as possible. It was one thing to know this was the best thing to do, and still another to be able to do it. In they thing must be done, and done fast. Suddenly I had a brain wave. I opened the door of the car and "Kids," [ said excitedly ced mob, "see who ket first. In about ten minutes | her new family. The Cookee Column was feeding her puppies quite placidly, on an old quilt in the back woodshed of Lorne Ball's house on the hill. Tt was a mean trick to play on all those kids along the Georgian Shore, but necessity demanded that T do it. It was for the good of Patsy and That night, after dark, when all the kids had disappeared, when the Timpkins and the Hoggs and the Smiths and Joneses had tucked their children safely in bed for the night, a queer procession arrived at Owlscroft. A man and a lady, two dogs and a basket full of sleeping puppies entered the door to the cot- tage in single file, and quietly settled down for the night. Found a Truck AND HE THOUGHT HE'D TAKE EVERYONE FOR A DRIVE BY MAX TRELL The big yellow truck was standing at the side of the road not far from the restaurant that looked like a train and was call- ed the Diner. Willy Toad, who had been hop- ping across the field. looking for something or other interesting (he wasn't sure what it might be) discovered the truck, and de- cided that it was IT! He immed- iately called Blackie Beetle, Blinky Mole, and Clarence and Archibald, the two caterpillars. "There's an empty truck, my friends," said Willy. 'They've gone and left it, and I've found it. So it's mine." "Who went and left it?" Black- ic asked. "The drivers." "Why did they do that? Tt looks like a good truck, Clarence and Archibald said. A Good Truck "Certainly it's a good truck," said Willy proudly. "You don't think I'd bother finding a no- good truck, do you?" Just drive around." "Can we go with you, please?" said Clarence and Archibald. "rd like to go. too," Blackie. "Of course," said Willy. "There is plenty of room for everybody." By this time several more of said Willy's friends came along-- Glive the Snail, Hopalong the Grasshopper, Squire Squirrel, Chippy the chipmunk, also sev- eral mice, a crowd of ants, two bees and a cow. "We're all going to Venezaus- tralia!" Clarence shouted. "In Willy's truck that he found! Everybody can come! There's plenty of room!" "rd like to see the Rocky Mountains if it isn't too much out of the way," the cow said to Wil- ly. "No trouble at all," said Willy. "Everybody get in. We'll start right away. The ants and the mice and the two bees started to get into the truck when Knarf and Hanid, the shadow-children, walked over to see what was happening. Different Places "I's my truck" explained Willy. "I found it standing here by the side of the road Come along. There's plenty of room." "Td also like to see the Pacif- ic Ocean" the cow said. "Would that be out of the way?" "No trouble at all," said Willy. "Get inside, pleas "And the Atlantic Ocean?" "We'll see all the oceans," said Willy, and he helped the cow get up the first step into the truck. All of a sudden the cow got stuck in the door of the truck, half-way in and half-way out. Moo!" she said loudly. more they pushed the cow, the harder she seemed to get stuck. Then Blinky and Willy and the shadow-children all got on the cow's tail and pulled. But that didn't do any good either. And at that instant the worst of all things happened! Two men came out of The Diner. They were the truck drivers. "Here, help me get. this cow off my truck!" Willy said to them. They got the cow off the truck all right and then they drove away. "Come back!" shouted Willy. "That's my truck!" But they didn't come back-- they never came back. HOUSECLEANING ALL lo DONE?
