She hadn't been away from the puppies for that long a time since they were born; but now that she had resigned as she said, I guess she felt she was allowed to leave and go visiting. Patsy was always a great vis- itor. She loved to go calling. There were certain cottages which she liked to visit most. Likely as not she was down the shore paying a call and wouldn't be home until she'd been offered some Tid-bits. The puppies had slept for over an hour after she'd gone and then they were wide awake and carrying on a free for all fight in their shower bath home. That morning, right after breakfast, T had built a new outside pen for them. They were big enough now to play outside for awhile each day and this was a good time to put them out. At first they were amazed at their new surroundings. They would wobble a few steps, then stop and look all around as if to say "We really can't believe our new' little eyes. This place looks so big and so interesting too! We like this place. We think we'll try to eat it." Then one of them would bite a mouthful of grass and his new little needle- like teeth would chew away at it until he found it wasn't pab- lum. Then out it would come and the puppy would wobble away and bump his head into his next of kin. Taffee was greatly interested in the goings on in the new pup- py pen. I fixed her a place where she could sit and look down on the wiggly ones without being seen by them. "Go on Tafeef" I said to her, "Jump in there and have a sis- terly play with them." "Ho-ho to be sure," she chort- led, "Not, this little number. Really Joe, what do you take me for? I am NOT a nurse maid, nor do I intend to be a plaything for seven unruly, unmanageable, un- gainly, unfriendly--" She didn't finish, she just snorted, and jumped down from her seat. She started to mince away in a very dignified manner, but she didn't get very far. Poor Taffee. I played such a mean trick on her. It didn't hurt her physically, but it hurt her feelings badly and embarrassed her beyond words. Just as she minced past me, I swooped on her and, in a single movement had her up off the ground, over the little fence and into the puppies' pen. They bothered her, they worried her, licked her and bit her, like some awful seven headed dragon which had suddenly arrived fresh from a fairy story of some terrible land where dragons and serpents are as common as cats and dogs are to us. Suddenly ~Taffee saw her chance of escape. Across the lit- tle pen she whizzed, jumping ov- er pups and food dishes. As she approached the side wall she gave a mighty leap. Her front paws reached the top and her body was just sailing over, when the extra weight on the fence, loosened it from the side supports and down it went with a crash. Away went Taff, practically flying over the ground with the seven little mis- chief makers pursuing her like a whirlwind of destruction.
