MERRY CHAPTER 13 THE PUP HUNT Just because Patsy had decid- ed to be really miserable and not hunt for the pups, didn't mean I could give up too and not look for them. I called my wife to give me a helping hand and we started along the shore call- ing "Pup, pup, puppety pup," and looking in all the places that a little pup might crawl. I saw Taffee returning home and I had to call the hunt off for a minute or so. Taffee had a treasure she'd found and it was a real antique. In fact, it was such an antique and so old I wished that it had rotten away before she'd ever come across it. It was the skeleton of a fish and it smelled to high heaven. "Well, honestly and truly she grunted, as I took it from her. "Why can't people mind their own business--some certain people I mean--why is it, every time I get some lovely, beauti- ful, choice morsel, that a certain person has to always arrive on the spot and relieve me of it? "Why, oh why, oh why?" I had to bury the stinky old fish skeleton and then we got along with the hunt once more. "Come along Taff," I coaxed, "please be a good soul and help us to hunt for the pup-kids. We really need you!" "I don't doubt it, ho-ho" she Jaughed at me. "Really I don't doubt it. You two probably never would find them alone, but don't you realize I have just spent the last half hour trying to get away from the pesky lit- tle pests and now you ask me to help hunt for them. Really, what do you take me for?" "Aw come on, see who can find one first" I urged. "I don't have to hunt" she giggled, "I know where they are --most of 'em--I think. I tell you what--," she said in a very bargaining manner, "If you give me back my lovely, beautiful, delicious old fishy-wishy, Tl help you find all the whole gang of ests," I debated with my wife. I wondered if we could find them without her help. I got up off the old overturned punt I'd been sitting on and slowly scratched my head. Should we try to find them without her, or should T give her the dirty, filthy, smelly old fish and get her to help us? "Tll give you a hint she sald, as she jumped up on the punt I'd been sitting on a few seconds before. "Turn over this old punty-wunty and you'll find two sleepy little puppsy-wupsies. Really, you'd never have thought of looking there, would you? Now, be honest, would you? Honestly--what can be stupider then a man? Don't answer--T'll tell you--two men--they can be twice as stupid!" I turned the boat over and WM. SEALE Custom Tractor Work Wood Sawing, Plowing, The Cookee Column there were two little fur balls all curled up asleep. Two were found but there were five more to find. "OK." she said. "Those two were free, but you have five more to find. Is it a bargain or isn't it? You must make up your mind soon, because you have to go up town for the mail soon and before you know it darkness will be up- on you and you will be grovelling around in the dark with a candle in your hand calling, "pup-pup- puppety-pup." "You win," I said "It's a bar- gain--help me find the other five and you can have your dirty smelly old fish." A It was easy with Taffee's help. Three and four were snuggled up in an old fruit basket close beside a large warm stone, where the sun's rays were acting like an electric blanket and keeping the two mischief makers cosy and warm. Next came five and six. They were together too, curled up on an old leather pillow that had fallen from Aunt Athol's ham- mock swing. One left--one left to find. 1 followed Taffee as she went from hiding place to hiding place, but no pup to be found. We circled the cottage, and we circl- ed the cottages on both sides of us. We looked under and around them carefully. We asked each person we saw and we called puppety-pup until we were hoarse. No pup to be found! I went again and again to the mended pen and counted and re- counted the inmates. One, two, three--four, five--six--and only six. One little pup was still at large, and which one do you think it was? Of course it would be! It was the favourite. It was Patsy's kid Fudgee. The Very Best Magician THAT'S WHAT MERLIN INSISTED HE WAS By MAX TRELL Merlin, the Magician, was sit- ting on the edge of the bookcase smiling as usual; he enjoyed everything. He was enjoying something this very minute. Knarf and Hanid, the Shadow children, had been talking about different things to Merlin. Then Merlin after listening for a while quite attentively, and nodding his head now and then, finally start- ed talking about himself. "As you well know," he said, "I'm being. Tve changed myself into all kinds of animals--lions, tig- ers, elephants, kangaroos: Tve changed myself into all kinds of birds, and all kinds of fish, and bushes." Thursday, April 20, 1950 all kinds of plants and trees and "Was it fun changing yourself into all those things?" Hanid asked. Very Funny "Yes indeed" said Merlin, smiling. And then, suddenly, he started to laugh. "I was just thinking of something very, very funny," he said. Knarf and Hanid begged Mer- lin to tell them what it was he was thinking of. "Once," said Merlin, "I decid- ed to change myself into some- thing that no one had ever tried before. It was an ordinary thing. Everyone in the world knew it. They had all seen it hundreds and hundreds of times. But it was the only thing of its kind. There was- n't another one like it." first thing you have fo do is to make the old moon disappear, otherwise you will have two moons in the sky. And that's sure to cause a lot of excitement. "So I gathered up a lot of clouds and piled them up around the old moon until it Was com- pletely out of sight. Then I sai my magic words and after abo an hour or so of saying them (for changing into the moon needs a lot of magic words) I found myself in the sky, right over a high~ church steeple. was pretty pleasant being there, and looking down at an the lights in the windows, and throwing moonbeams around on the ponds and lakes. I had quite forgotten about the real moon until suddenly--well, there it was, pushing the clouds away, as angry as can be. It came right up to me, face to face. "Get out, get out!" it roared. "The next second it puffed it- self out and gave a blow like a great wind. The clouds rolled over me. There was thunder and lightning. And down I came in ; thousand pieces--a thousan "What was it, Mr. Merlin?" Knarf said. Merlin smiled again. "The moon." At this both Knarf and Hanid exclaimed in astonishment: "You changed yourself into the moon!" "Well," continued Merlin, it was a bit of trouble. Even though T'm probably the greatest magi- cian in the world, it was still a bit of trouble. And most of the trouble came after T had changed myself into it Into a Lion "You see, my dears, if you change yourself into a lion, or an elephant, or a butterfly, or an eagle, or an oak tree, or even into a mountain, there are al- ways more lions and elephants and butterflies and eagles and oak trees and mountains around So nobody pays much attention. Then Merlin iaid his magic words But changing yourself into the moon is a different story. The pieces of moonbeams." And Mer lin, thinking about this 'adven- ture, laughed again.
