MERRY. CHAPTER 20 GOOD-BYE TO BEULLA Poor little Mickee Finn! He was the only little boy dog left in the puppy pen. The little girl dogs led him a merry dance. Beulla Pengilly continually an- noyed him by chewing on his ears. Binker Hoodwink tried to eat as much of his food as she could when she had wolfed down her own share. Fudgee Stroodle, the boss of the pen, shoved him from left to right and from north to south, She wasn't nearly as large as Mickee Finn, but her sharp little teeth left marks in soft puppy-ish skin and she near- ly always got the best of every argument. Sometimes he would forget he was a little gentleman dog and would turn savagely on one or more of his sisters and send them scuttling to the card- board nest box in the corner. "Aw sh-sh-shucks," he used to say. "These g-ggirls all m-m-m- make me sisisick. I'm the only m-m-man dog left so I mu-m-must assert my-my-myself." One lovely autumn afternoon, when the red old sun was casting his warm rays down on sleeping canine inmates of the puppy pen, a visitor arrived at Owlscroft. She had travelled far and was in search of a spaniel puppy. She Wished to purchase her for a sick little daughter who was about to return from the hospital. She had seen Bonnee Silversides up at Harvey BEtherington's Dairy and she wanted one just like her for a present to cheer the sick little girl. ee Column Fudgee and. hauled her out of the nest for the, customer to in- spect, but she growled at the lady in such a savage little man- ner that she seemed really alarm. |i © a "Oh,'T wouldn't want that nasty little one," said the lady. "Im sure my little girl wouldn't like her!" : "Neither do wew-we," tered Mickee Finn, "but we're ssstuck with hér and what c-ccan we do?" i After much deliberation and careful inspection, the lady decided that Beulla Pengilly would be the one to go and be the playmate for the little sick girl. splut- t We got Beulla ready to go. With the usual big bow around her neck and a little bag of pup- Dy biscuits for the trip, she went |i happily on her way. The three remaining pups did not seem to care a whit that they were down to three. They were more interested in who would get Beulla's share of the supper. Mickee Finn was specially Pleased because now he had only two to contend with and at least the ear biter had gone. It would be easier to fight off two sisters, He might get a little more peace ow. "Come along old girl," I called to Patsy, who was standing by the pump having a lovely cool drink of pump water. "Your sup- per's ready and you are minus one more child." "Well bless my tail feathers!" mumbled "Pats" as she ambled towards the kitchen door. "I get every their hissing voices. "We were in that pot of water. It got so hot we finally jumped = out. They all seemed to be arms and legs and necks and heads, which kept getting longer and shorter and flying off and coming togeth- er again. They finally all settled down around the edge of the pot of boiling water. "Who are you?' again. "Giants!" they all answered in Hanid asked "Oh," said Hanid. "You're ng but a few drops of water into steam." Whirled Around At this the white figures all in anger. 'We're giants. We can do any- can push locomo- Hanid was about to say: "That s nonsense!" But she suddenly that locomotives "And 'we push steamboats-- 'We 'push them all ired of pushing!" Hanid knew that was right, "We push machines in factor- es. We push derricks. We build out of the pot wakened and hopefully, expecting some food, they rushed to the wall of the pen and looked up at the stranger. "That 'one," she sald, pointing to Mickee Finn, "is just what I want--a blonde and what a beauty!" "What g-ggood tttaste she has," laughed Mickee Finn. "She b-b-best dog in.a hustle." We explained to our guest that she could not have the one she had picked as he had already been chosen and was leaving in a day or two. Besides, she want- ed a female so she must choose Binker, Beulla or Fudgee. "Well, she won't have me!" sald Fudgee, as she growled her most ferocious little growl and high-tafled off to the sleeping box in the corner. "I really can't leave at this time. I have things to do, and besides, Dribbi needs me to keep peace in the pen." "Don't be 80 conceited," Bink- er called after her. "Who on earth would want a crab like you?" "Of course," chimed in Beulla, "a crab fo be sure and a bossy crab at that! And anyway, the lady wants a. good sized puppy, not a half-pint runt like you." THE STEAM WANTED TO GET turned-about quietly in the corner of the kit: chen, when she was startled by 2 noise. It came from the stove where a pot of water set to boil. The noise itself was being made by the cover of the Pot, which was rattling furiously up and down. of the rattling loud hissing voices. "Let us out of here!
