MAY LBURNG ARTIN BROTHERS MUSIC ALBUM BY IRVEN FELL The year was 1837, the place, St. Hyacinthe, Province of Que: bec, we will come to the name of the central figure of the story further on, so just read on. The central figure in this lit- tle yarn was quite young at the time and he had a yen to im- prove his education so he went to a little town called St. Therese, about 50 miles away and entered a small college there, presided over by its founder, a Rev. Abbe Ducharme. It so happened school another that at this young student had started to build an organ but it was not completed. The Rey. Abbe soon found that his new pupil showed a keen interest in things mechanical and it was suggested that he try and finish the uncompleted organ. That was the start of one of the greatest organ building con- cerns in the world and the plant is at St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. The name of this young man was-- wait, we will go a little further first. The young man went back to St. Hyacinthe and started to build organs for himself in a lit- tle workshop, and it was not long before organs were being instal- led in various churches through- out the province. The instru- ments became better known with each installation in both Upper and Lower Carada. St. Martin's (Laval), Cathed- rals at Kingston and Ottawa were three of the well-known churches to instal his organs. During this period two sons of this man were coming into man- hood and they became imbued with their father's craft for build- ing church organs. After their father's death in 1874 the two young men, realiz- ing there was much to learn about organ building, made sev- eral trips to Europe and received the advice of the skillful crafts: men in France, Germany, Bel glum and England. Coming back to' Canada after their first trip, they re-opened the small factory in St. Hyacin- the and built many interesting organs in the few years to follow. Then they received the order INSIDE BRIEFS!!! There's a reason why Hope Emerson now being hailed for her sensational performance in "Caged," is just about the tall- est and the brawniest femme in Cinemaland. She was a black- smith before she decided to be- come an actress! Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall have celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary. A new title has been found for Ruth Roman's gorgeous figure. It's a "Roman Numeral!" Allan Nixon has been contract- ed to co-star with his wife, Marie Wilson, in "School for Scandal" --and what's scandalous = about that? Nostalic note--Harry Carey's widow, Olive, has an important role in RKO's " Mad With Much Heart," her first picture in 21 years. She was a star in the sil- ents; name Olive Olden. June Haver is taking secret flying lessons, and is said to be within two hours of getting her license. Dennis Morgan claims he landed a 33% inch "musky" on his recent fishing tour of Wiscon- sin's famous lakes. Gordon MacRae finished his role in "Tea for Two" in the very nick of time. His whole house- hold is now under quarantine with the measles. A Stork at Warners is about to become a father! His name is Ray Stork, and he's one of the actors in the valley lot's current ly filming Technicolor melo drama, "Dallas." John Hoyt, of the "New Mex- ico" cast, is a very disillusioned young actor. On location in that state, he asked several Indians about war paint. They never heard of the stuff. W. E. DAVIS 71 Colborne St., Oakville Evenings and Holidays Phone 612-R W. S. DAVIS & SON REAL ESTATE - INSURANCE MORTGAGES * Speaking of irony--Jesse K. Lasky got arrested for speeding while driving to the Columbia on a hurry-up call. When he finally got there, they put him to work] penning a foreward for "Prowl ar," praising cops for their outstanding work. The perfect leg (female, of course), says LeRroy Prinz, who is now directing the dancing cu- ties in "Tea for Two" has an eight-inch ankle, an eleven and one-half inch calf, a 12-inch knee and a 19% inch upper leg. OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD Husky Ward Bond threw James Cagney across a room so hard in a scene for "Kiss To- morrow Goodbye" that the shoul- der of the star went right through the opposite wall! ~ LUCKY TOKEN Mercedes McCambridge, who startled Cinemaland, not long ago, by wearing a 15-year-old dress she had purchased in Chic: ago to receive her Academy Award, doesn't intend to part with the gown for a long time yet, if ever. Says the actress who lately completed a stellar role in "Lightning Strikes Twice;" "It's my lucky token, for one thing. Furthermore, and of even great- er importance, it's the guide for my figure. As long as I can get into it 1 don't have to worr: Guest of the Week If William Pilgrim, R.R. 1, will present himself at the box office of the Century Theatre, any night next week, he and another guest will be admitted free as guests of the Journal. Now if it could only put floors and ceilings on the thermometer what a wonderful government we'd have. That's Right! The Pig & Whistle Inn Bronte-By-The-Lake A Smart Place To DINE and DANCE Telephone Bronte 91 For Table Reservations which really the firm as a leader in the art. It was to build an organ for the Church of Notre Dame in Montreal. The organ was almost of unknown" 'proportions for this American continent, haying four manuals and 82 stops. It was such a success that their factory had to be enlarged to look after the many orders which followed. This was in 1890. First orders from the principal cities of Can- ada, then the U.S.A, then over- seas in Japan, and even from Europe which could be consider- ed the cradle of the arf of organ building. One order came from Dawson City in the Yukon, and the firm built the organ there in 1901. Tt is still there and being used. I had better give you the name of the young man who started this business. He was Joseph Casavant. His two sons were Claver and Samuel, and they are all dead. However, in their lifetime they did teach members of the present staff, who have been with the firm from 25 to 60 years. Preference was always given to sons of old employees and in this way early traditions of the art were carried on and into the business of to- day. In Toronto there are 82 Casa- vant" organs. There are only four church organs in Oakville and three of them are Casavants. There 'are 16 in Calgary, 18 in Edmonton, 22 in Vancouver, 28 in Winnipeg, 20 in St. John, 31 in Halifax, 24 in Hamilton, 28 in Ottawa, 13 in London, well over 50 in Montreal, and we could go on and on like 5 in Guelph, 6 in Stratford, 8 or so in Kitchener and hundreds of single installa- tions in small towns and villages throughout Canada. If export is any way of a sign of the goodness of the product, then the Casavant is good. 1 saw a list of the organs exported to the - U.S.A. and there must be hundreds of organ manufacturers there, but almost every State in the Union was listed. There are nearly 30 Casavant organs in Detroit and I do not know how many in New York City and Chicago and other large cities. 1 came to write this article af- ter seeing some liferature on the Casavant Organs. All organs are beautiful to me, and I can get a lot of pleasure out of a little reed organ and I know plenty of oth- er people who do too. It was very impressive to me to see how the firm started. How it has grown and the wonderful monuments it will leave to pos- terity, monuments of sincerity of purpose, honesty in business and a devotion to the art of or- gan building.
