Squire Squirrel was the owner ahd man- ager of the boarding house. He owned the tree. His boarders were robins, wrens, thrushes, sparrows, an owl and now and then some other birds who came to visit. A family * of chipmunks lived in the cellar of the board- ing house--that is to say, in the Toots of the tree; and Squire Squirrel lived upstairs in a hol- low in the main trunk. Tell that horrible Owl to do his work in the daytime and sleep at night, the way everyone else does, and he won't be bothered by any noise! Tell him to stop hooting all night! He keeps us awake!" Knarf was just about to go down apd tell Owl all this' when everyone in the whole tree, in- cluding the Owl, set up a shriek ing. "Keep her away! Don't let her get up here! Oh!" Knarf looked down. The cat, who lived in a house at the oth- er end of the road, was starting to climb up the tree! Knarf clim- bed down as fast as he could and chased her away. In the few minutes that he took Squire Squirrel's place, poor Knarf had had more troubles than most people have in a year. He climbed up and down the tree a dozen times. He had to mind baby birds; he had to drive cat- erpillars away. He knew now why Squire Squirrel got a headache. He was glad when he came back again.
