OAKVILLE-TRAFALGAR JOURNAL Thursday, Sept. 14, 195) HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS By Myke Dyer You readers aren't half as sur- prised in reading that by-line as I am in writing it. I'm back again for another year, but please don't hand in your sub- scription to the Journal just for a small, heart-breaking thing like that! It's going to be a little tougher this year writing the column by proxy from Ryerson Institute of Technology--the Journalism and Publicity course --but we'll do our best. Consider- ing that we're in training for the "noospaper racket," I'm get- ting a little practical experience at the same time. So stick with us for thirty weeks or so, won't you, and keep up with the me- teor-like progress of the high school student's life? School has been in session for a little over a week, but already things are almost in full swing. Attendance has hit a new high this year, and Dave Pawson and Kate Laughton are presiding as Student Captains. Very fine choices indeed; Congratulations! Football practices began on Monday, and we'll try to have a more detailed report on the pros- pective teams next week. On Tuesday night, Sept. 5, the annual "Backlto-School-Hop" was held at the Eaton Auditorium; and enjoying a last fling before buckling down to serious work I saw such Oakville stalwarts as Pete Sutton, Bunny Orr, Rex Louth, Bey Hills, Pete Banning, Rice Honeywell, Pat MacCleary, and Lorrie Wright. By the way, the high school Baton reps this year are Pete Sutton and Louise, Heaven, and the Simpson reps are Rex Louth and Bey Hills. A very fine quartet. Just to name a few: Bill Hall to Royal Roads in B.C; Diet Allan ry /{ OH, HAPPY DAY! And so it goes, all of us off into the cold, cruel world. The first column of the year doesn't hold too much, but we'd like to give this week's orchids to the new Student Captains, Eaton's -and Simpsons reps, and to Pete Banning, last year's edi- tor of the year book, Pleiad, who did such a wonderful job on the magazine, 1 sincerely hope that all of you will bear with me during this Understanding Prime Service Work Factor, Speaker Tells Rotary The value of Rotary as an in- fluence for better international understanding was stressed by Tom Rogers, leading Toronto Ro- tarian, in a talk to members of Oakville Rotary Club Monday evening. The Rotary movement, the speaker pointed out, included 340,000 members in 84 countries. "The understandivg of a man of another race, creed, and other historical antecedents is what counts," declared Mr. Rogers. "What is common to all men is deepest in all." TEEN TOWN BY DON LOVEGROVE Who will be the next mayor of Teen Town? This is the question that will be answered in the next few weeks, with nominations being called next week and elections to be held the following Friday. Mem- bers must also select a new coun- cil, reeve and treasurer for the en- suing year, so let's all turn out and support the candidates. Interest has dropped consider ably during the summer months and lots of work will have to be done to build it up to its usual level. This can only be done by a hard working executive, the selection of which is in your hands. Let's have a good attend- ance on Friday night, September 22, and help to make this election a successful and rousing event. Incidentally, there will be no Teen Town tomorrow night due to the Optimist Fair. Oakville Juvenile ball team came roaring in around 11 o'clock on Friday all smiles after their four to one victory over Thorold. Good going fellows! ' WHO'S ON FIRST? If there is anything I neglected or should put in, I hope you student readers will let me know about it. So, for this week, as we say in the news paper business, "Thirty." WED - THUR SEPT. 20.
