A committee was formed to search for land. Three pieces were picked and the one chosen as best for our purpose was purchased. This three acre tract of land lies at the east end of Maple Ave. Here we made plans to build our shelter. It was necessary to have our new shelter ready by May of this year, so we started work on our plans early in April. The new building was 0 be of cement block faced with red brick on the front. It was to be very modern and up-to-date and large enough for .xpansion as the town grew. To make sure that we had plan- ned the very best, the committee made several trips to cities near and far to see what Guelph, Wel land and others had for shelters; also to note specially where they were situated and how' near to houses in the district. By the middle, of April the plans were finished and approved by all the directors. 1 The Jr. Humane Society under the able leadership of Mrs. Ray Manbert and Mrs. Herbert Mer- ry co-operated most wonderfully and the Jr. members sold enough draw tickets to raise the money to pay for every cement block and every bag of cement neces- sary to build" the shelter. The work that the kids did was really wonderful. There are so many grand young workers among the Jr. branch of the Socilety that I cannot mention names as they would fill the page. By Pet Show Day in May the kids had over their quota and the bank account of the Jr. Humane $ociety is now $500. as their donation to the new shelter. We found that building regula- tions in the Township would make it necessary for us to build our new shelter three hundred feet from the railway track. This. means our front door would be nearly 1000 feet from Maple Ave. In winter this would make it al- most impossible for the shelter keeper, or a vehicle to get through the snow to the shelter. We want- ed permission to build the new building just over the little river behind a clump of bushes where it could hardly be seen by any of the - nearby residents and t would be much nearer to Maple Ave. At a meeting in June of the Southern Trafalgar Ratepayers it was talked over and not one person was against us building on any part of the property as long as it didn't infringe on the by- Well, this is now the middle of September and we still are no further ahead. We have worked at it all summer and tried to) find a way to do it correctly but it seems one person is against it. I ask you should one person hold up the building of. the much needed shelter? Again I repeat--this shelter is to serve the public of Oakville and Trafalgar.
