"Don't think for a minute, dears," Judy was saying, "that the furniture isn't glad to be kept clean. Chairs and tables and beds and lamps don't like themselves to be covered with dust any more feel very uncomfortable when, they're not clean." Knarf said: "Do they really mind, Judy?" "Mind?" repeated Judy. "In- deed they do. I once knew a chair who was so angry at not being dusted regularly that he just leaned himself back against the wall and wouldn't let anyone sit on him" "My goodness!" exclaimed Han- in alarm. "I certainly wouldnt want that to happen to any of our chairs! What did the people who lived in the house do to make him let folks sit on him again?" Dusting and Polishing "They had to 'dust him off from top to bottom, and polish him with wax. But even so he kept grumb- ling and creaking for a long time after that, And there was anoth- er house where 10 one ever swept the crumbs often enough from under the table. That table be- came even angrier than the chair and one day it decided it had had enough of bread crumbs around its feet. So it walked right out of the dining room into the parlor and stood itself next to the piano where there were no bread crumbs at all. You can't imagine how amazed everyone in the house was when they found where the table had walked to. Fortun- ately, they had the good sense to sweep up all the falling bread crumbs from that moment on. The table was glad to return to its own place and never moved itself away again. They were sailing on their way to discover America. The ocean was all around them, and «| it looked fresh and blue and clean, But when Columbus looked out through the pictureframe into the room of the hbuse where the picture hung, he saw nothing but furniture that needed dusting, rugs that needed beatings, floors that needed sweeping asd cob- webs in all corners of the ceiling. He thought sure that the children that lived in the house would help their mother keep the furni- ture bright and polished. Day af- ter day, he patiently waited. But|}. nothing happened: Finally, just to teach them a lesson, he did a very extraordinary thing." "What did he do?" asked Knarf. Sailed Away Judy chuckled. "Perhaps you won't believe this, Perhaps no one Star," "The Marvellous Adventures NEWEST FICTION SWELLS LATEST LIBRARY LISTING Twelve new books have been ad- ded to the shelves of Oakville Pub- lic Library this month, making a total of about 275 additions since the first of the year, There are,' three volumnes of fiction, "The Weeping and the Laughter," by Vera Caspary, "Senator Mar- borde's Daughter," by. When the children looked at the picture next morning, all that was left was the ocean. The ship had disappeared." "Did they ever come back?" asked Hanid. "Oh, yes," replied Judy; "but only after the furniture was dust- ed, the rugs were beaten, the floor was swept and the cobwebs were taken down from the corner of the ceiling." And Judy chuckled as she went on with her house cleaning. NUDGING SILENCE A really sympathetic woman can listen more out of you than you ever intended to tell.
