There is as much variation in the decoration of Christmas trees as there is in the homes where these yearly symbols stand. Some prefer the sophisticated flavor of strangely colored trees formally trimmed, but most of us prefer the traditional green tree With red as the secondary color. On it we like to hang the old baubles that have gained sentimental value through years of associa- tion with this warm, generous season. The experts tell us that we should pick the type of tree care- fully--that spruce ahd hemlock lose their needles quickly, that Douglas fir is ideal. Whatever kind of tree, try to keep it im water as this makes it more fire- resistant than any treatment with chemical. For those who do wish to sub- stitute the green of the tree for something different, it can be sprayed with resin emulsion, cas- ein or aluminum paint, or with one-coat self-priming oil base flat paint. If you're spraying, be sure to have lots of space--perhaps the garage is the best spot. We know people who successfully spray paint with their vacuum cleaner attachment, and for small decordtions, spraying can be done with an insect sprayer. If you retain the natural green of the tree but wish a touch of sophistication, you can dip pine cones in silver, gold, or other colors; or the tips of the comes can be dabbed with paint. You can, just for fun, paint the names of members of the family, or per- Ta HH] sonal Christmas greetings, on large Xmas tree balls. Some like to whip up soap flakes to cover their tree with white, whilst others depend on plain old cotton batten for their results. Spun glass is most effect ive, and we've read that a new type is out that doesn't stick to everything. We've seen a tree decorated with cotton fringe--the type used for trimming curtains --in red and green, and it looks Very gay. For the centre of the table a favorite low bowl or painted cake tin piled high with gleaming Christmas tree balls will make a shining decoration, and will be particularly effective if youre able to coil a string of colored lights beneath the balls. Painted blocks to hold candles will bright- én your windows on Christmas Eye. A tree for the table can be constructed from chicken wire and narrow wooden strips, if there's a handyman in the house. You make a flat frame from the strips in a stylized tree shape; the angled, tiered kind you used to draw in grade school. The chicken wire Is tacked over the open triangular spaces and a base is attached to make the tree stand. The whole thing is paint- ed green. When the time comes for its decoration, tuck small pieces of fir or pine in the chick- en wire until its completely cov- ered. You can add other small ornaments as you choose. For window decoration, imita- tion snowflakes can be cemented on, Whilst we haven't tried it, we have 1t on good authority that an unexcelled 'method of frosting windows is with a combination of beer and epsom salts! First one applies the beer to the window and then throws the epsom salts, where they stick. Should be fun trying it anyway. Youll enjoy the holiday season more if there is a fine festive air to the house, and your guests will be asier to entertain against sparkling background.
