When Stuart Heisler, directing the adventure drama "Dallas," tok his film troupe, headed by stars Gary Cooper, Ruth Roman and Steve Cochran, on an out door location to shoot a romantic sequence at sunrise he didn't ex- pect undue complications. But imagine his surprise, with cameras rolling and Cooper and Miss Roman whispering soff. words to each other, when 'hund- reds of birds hidden in surround- ing trees, broke into gleeful chat- tering. "Cut cried the director--but the birds kept right on singing. A halt had to be called to the shooting until some way was de- vised to quiet the noisy intru- ders. Finally, after many futile attempts Heisler came up with the answer when he had a "tech- nician set off gun powder to frighten them away. Ready to shoot again, the dir- ector was further dismayed. The sun wasn't 'where it should have been. Shadows cast by the prin- cipals were much too short to suggest that the sun was just ris- ing. So Heisler had to order elec- tricians to set up artificial "sun rising" lighting. By the time the cameras were ready to roll again, the birds had returned. But now Heisler was well pre- By Jim Harrison ANCIENT VEIL A harem veil worn by Yvonne De Carlo for her seductive role in "The Desert Hawk," is the real McCoy. The acrtess acquired the veil during a recent tour of Tur- Key. While in Ankara, Turkey's cap: ital, Miss De Carlo had several dates with Omand Hamid, hand- some young son of a local mer- chant, who gifted her with the veil as a token of his regard and admiration. Hamid told Yvonne that the precious veil, of the purest and most durable silk strands in sev- eral colors, was one that went back 470 years to the harem of a Turkish sultan named Hajazet IL Yvonne uses the veil in "The Desert Hawk" as a supplement to the equipment she employs to tan- talize Richard Greene, her hand: some co-star. He was first heard im this role at the Metropolitan, posite Emma Alban 94th, 1890. He repeated it in Phil- adelphia and Chicago during the same tour. Returning to the States in 1894 he again sang the role with Albani and the great Victor Maurel was in the cast on this occasion, Tamagno was A Sensa- tion every time he came to Am- erica. On this tour he was also heard in other famous roles, in 11 Trovatore, L'Africana, Aida, liam Tell, Le Prophete, Lammermoor and others, ing Faust. When one thinks of the famous tenors, such as. Dereskes, Caruso and others, one can only take the conclusion that this man was really great. I had never heard of the name until I read of his cen- tenary comment in the Opera News. It is also remarkable that his voice can still be heard on records. Truly the past half a century has given us some won- derful inventions. Starts out as a baker and locksmith and ends up by having his centenary observed as a singer. The Choral Society resumed re- hearsals on Wednesday last and will continue with a view of hav- ing a concert during the first weelk of April. There is no limit to the num- ber of voices for the chorus and there is a definite need for ten- ors and basses. All voices are welcome but if there are any men who read this and are interested please attend at Lusk Hall any Wednesday evening at 8.15 p.m. Winner of the Week If GEOFFREY BIDE, 277 Dun- das Street, will call in at Lof- quit's Record Bar, he will be pre- sented with a red seal record with the compliments of the Jour nal. includ- BETTER ODDS One very good thing about THERE'S HOPE YET It there's anything in this ev: olution business, Nature may vet produce a pedestrian who can jump three ways at once. The story was in the Opera News of the Air, distribut- ed by the Metropolitan Opera Co. of New York. Francesco Tam- agno, was born in 1850 in Turin, and he died where he was born. As is the case with many of the world's best known artists, this man was apprenticed to be any- thing but a singer, first to a bak- er, then to a locksmith, and fin- ally admitted as a pupil to the Conservatory as a student of one Pedrotti. He made his debut as af tenor when he was 23 years of age. 'An amazing thing in connection with this singer is' that his records are still to be had in England, the records being made in 1903. I did not think that records went back that far. I have one or two of Carusos, and he has been dead well over 20 years. It is said of Tamagno that he had a wonderful voice but was not gifted with an over-abundance of brains, However, his natural voice was of such character that | Guiseppe Verdi spent many hours coaching him for the role of Otel- lo which was to have its premiere at Milan. It is also said that no other singer has ever equalled WATERLOO, ONTARIO the performance of Tamagno in LUMBER ILLWOR BUILDERS' SUPPLIE WHETHER YOU'RE PLANNING TO BUILD, REPAIR OR REMODEL WE ASK YOU TO CONSULT US FOR ALL YOUR NEEDS . ..
