PAY YOURSELF FIRST WHEN PAY-DAY COMES KEY TO GETTING AHEAD SAYS B OF M A good many people hardly even get a look at their money on pay-day. Before they can say, "What do we owe?", it's all paid out to everybody but them- selves. ; ~ No one can do this for long without sinking neck- deep into a mess of money problems. So they worry. They worry about bills to come and they worry about unexpected hills. Money is always on their mind, sour- ing their pleasure in living. And, of course, cobwebs gather on their plans for the future. The Bank of Montreal has lately come up with an answer to this state of affairs. It's Personal Plan- ning, or "how to live within your income and enjoy it." Personal Planning is budget-planning with a plus. You see ordinary budgets often turn out to be straight-jackets because they don't provide for a very important person, yourself. There vou have the plus in Personal Planning. It shows you how to draw up a budget-plan to meet your particular circumstances. It shows you how to pay yourself, too, on pay-day. Stan Otton, B of M manager at Oakville, invites you to drop in for yofir copy 'of the bank's booklet about Personal Planning. There's no obligation--ex- cept to yourself. I many times wonder if it is worth a choir's time and effort to practice, for soloists to work as they do and cholr leaders 'and or- ganists to worry the way some of them do, Personally I get awfully fed up with having people sort of sym- pathise with me for not having a larger congregation 'to sing to. I do appreciate the concern. and thought of these people, but I can also say that I am hardened to it now after over 20 years. Really I shouldn't complain because we always get a good many more people out when we sing a Can- tata, but there are always lots of empty seats. For my part, as I say, I believe I haye come to the Indifferent stage, which perhaps is one good reason why I should end my activities in this line, but I do feel for these volunteers who. attend rehearsals regularly and really work hard to offer a ser- vice of praise when even their own congregation won't show it's appreciation by turning out. Some of these people love to talk and say how much credit the choir deserves, what good they do and'so on. Biggest part of it is poppycock. They take thelr choir as a matter of fact. Just when it seemed that John Bulmer had firmly established his claim to having the oldest Empire coin in the Oakville area, along comes Tom Merry, Eighth Line, with an even old- er one. Tom's worn silver piece has a 1563 dating, while John's is a 1578 specimen. Both are Elizabethan shillings. This sort of thing could go on indefinitely, Journal staffers who have been examining = currency of varied vintage for weeks are inclined to believe. But Tom's entry will be pretty hard to beat. gets a vote of thanks at the an- nual church meeting. Don't think because I am a choirleader at a certain church that I am strictly alluding to my own people. This kind of thing is rampant all over the country' with a few city ex- ceptions. It is hard to understand afid surely it cannot be the time involved because the average small Cantata only takes about 40 minutes at the most but to sing that '40 minutes takes hours of rehearsal and thought. In a weekly magazine which I receive called the "Opera News' I find these words and they seem to strike at the root of what I so often try to get oyer in this col- umn, I quote: "Defence is the National object today. Total de- fence, however, is more than a matter of physical protection. It must safeguard spiritual and cultural assets as well. While we build the weapons of war and train the manpower to use them, we can not neglect the spirit and the mind. To do so would be to court failure in our defence efforts, for weapons to succeed must be inspired by men- tal alertness and a spiritual pur- pose." Example is a wonderful thing. The indifference exhibited by. congregations is, I am told, be- coming quite evident in choir cir- cles. A choirmaster has almost to be a tyrant and threaten dire things to those who do not at- tend regularly. In many cases even: youngsters have to be given a small remuneration to assure their attendance. I do not think it is given because those who give it think they are worth it, but rather that it provides a club to. hold over their heads. It is now and always has been my thought that this type of work in the church is one which should be a pleasure to perform. The duty of the congregation is as high as that of the choir to see that the praise we offer to One whom we: profess to admire is listened to with the same earnest ness in which it is delivered. Do. not come with the idea of hearing a great and grand rendition. Com- mon sense should tell all that a volunteer choir is not capable of great and grand performances. But do come' and by coming say, "we appreciate your offering of praise." Winner of the Week If G. In very large Ranger Crews each watch is also divided into two parts, Fore and Aft. The Petty Officer is respon- sible for a considerable part of the instruction necessary before recruits can be enrolled, and after enrolment she helps with the tea- ching of parts of the AB Test. Any suggestions or complaints that any member of the Crew may have are relayed to the officers through the Petty Officers, and all commands are given by Officers to Petty Officers who are respon- sible for seeing that their watch- es carry them out explicitly. To a mother, her child's tears call forth an emotional reaction that plucks her heartstrings, but'to the pharmacist, tears are more apt to be a purely scientific problem. Your pharmacist must know the exact saltiness of tears, be- cause sometimes he is required to duplicate their salt content in prescriptions for solutions to be dropped into the eyes. This process is called making the solution isotonic with tears. By means of it undesired irritation is largely avoided and the eye accepts the medication with little discomfort. When it is required, your physicians prescription will call for medication of this type. By mathematical calculation your pharmacist can adjust the salt content of the prescribed solution to correspond to the salt content of the tear fluid. The Port 'Watch includes the 'Tender' which is where all recruits serve their three months attendance required by the Pre-Enrolment Test, and where they learn the work requir ed before they can take the Rang- r promise. After recruits have been enrolled as Rangers they transfer into the Starboard Watch for instruction on AB Test and Ranger Star.
