"Shevchenko is a true Ukran- lan hero, and Reds in Canada have seized on him to promote their work. Many loyal Ukranians have no idea that Communism is the backbone of the AUUC," he declared. Police Eye Peeled The special branch is maintain. ing a close watch on develop- ments for the July 1 celebration at. the camp, located on Dundas highway just west of the Six- teen Mile (Creek bridge. It is ox- pected some 20,000 Ukranians from all parts of Canada and the U.S. will attend what the AUUC has described as "a cultural ga- thering divorced entirely from politics." No Visitors! AT NAVY PHONE 125 THE OAKVILLE-TRAFALGAR JOURNAL RESCUE CHILLY SAILOR Hugh Dobbs, manager of Aero Marine Industries, was rescued from Lake Ontario's cold water Monday after clinging for more than 20 minutes to his overturned sailboat some 150 yards from shore. Hobbs was rescued by chief John Derry and Chas. Kenny in the latter's lifesaving launch, af- ter a resident heard his cries for help. He was testing a new type of rigging when a sudden gust capsized his craft, he told Chief Derry. eS great preparations for the event. Two Journal staffers who visited the property this week found con- structon crews busily grading and gravelling roads which wind through the extensive acreage past summer camp huts, a pavilion and outdoor dance floor, and a smart new clubhouse as yet un- completed. There were no ex- ecutive members in evidence, but at every turn, signs bluntly in- formed: "No Visitors, Please." A big plywood casing shielded the statue from the curious eyes of passing motorists. But Shey- chenko has definitely taken a firm footing (of concrete, prepared prior to his arrival) only a few short yards from the highway, and frowned darkly down at fhe Journal representatives as they. peered into his temporary abode. Ask Ban Last week, Prime Minister St. Laurent received a wire from a group of loyal Canadian Ukran- lans asking that the Palermc meeting be banned. Professor Watson Kirkconnell, president of Acadian University, referred to the celebration as a "piece of lying effrontery by the -Com- munists fntended to promote Communism among the Ukran- fans." At the same time, RCMP officers claimed a great deal of money has been collected to fur- ther the Red cause at the Shev- chenko unveiling. According to police, there was nothing illegal about entry of the statue into Canada, as neither the Commun- ist party, now known as the La- bor Progressi party, or its AUUC stooge is an illegal organ- ization. Yesterday, loyal mem- bers of the Ukranian Canadian Committee, an organization some 450,000 strong, were still pressing their efforts to block the meeting. Missing Paper Caper Students at Oakville-Trafalgar high school almost missed an exam Tuesday--missed it, that is, because they very nearly didn't even get to write it! It all began when asst. principal Sheff Stirtan discovered Mon- day that the exam books hadn't arrived. Checking, he found the papers had been addressed sim- ply '"Oakville-Trafalgar," and had been delivered to the Jour- nal. A flying visit to this office disclosed that the erring trans- port company had picked up the missing exams, sent the asst. principal on a trouble shooting telephone trail. It all worked out satisfactorily in the end for Mr. Stirtan, who finally got his exam papers in time. The stu- dents, possibly, weren't quite as satisfied at the success of his search.
