Dr. Theresa Tam, Cana- da's chief public health offi- cer, said during a weekly update on Friday (May 20) that we can expect to see cases rising and declining in the summer months. "There are always abili- ties for surges to occur, particularly in under-vac- cinated populations... so that wouldn't be unexpect- ed," she said. "What I'm re- ally looking out for, of course, are some substan- tial changes where there's an entirely new variant of concern." Dr. Tam said she re- mains "cautiously optimis- tic" that there will be a re- prieve over the next couple of months, while stressing the need for the public to remain vigilant and be ready for any COVID-19 re- surgence in the fall. Following public health measures can keep any re- surgences low, she added. As for COVID-19 hospi- talizations in Halton, there were 20 people with CO- VID-19 in local hospitals as of May 20 -- with seven pa- tients reported in the Bur- lington hospital, another seven in Oakville, four in Milton, and two in George- town. The region also report- ed at least seven more deaths linked to the virus this week. Here's a weekly look at COVID news and cases.
