Peter & Jennifer info@watsoninvestments.com (905) 842 -2100 The Town of Oakville Water Air Rescue Force (TOWARF) is crediting a life-jacket with keep- ing a 53-year-old man alive after he plunged into the frigid waters of Lake Ontario during the severe May 21 thunderstorm. TOWARF Search Master Kris Gordon said that when the storm hit, the Oakville man was sepa- rated from the kayak he was rid- ing. At around 1 p.m., a member of a local canoe club contacted au- thorities and reported the man had been out on Lake Ontario during the storm and had not re- turned to shore. Gordon said TOWARF's 27- foot search and rescue vessel was already out on the water, dealing with an empty capsized boat when they received instructions to begin a search for the missing man. About three minutes later, the TOWARF vessel located the miss- ing kayaker about half a mile from the Oakville pier. "He estimated he had been in the water about 25 minutes at that point. Due to the cold water, he wasn't able to self-rescue," said Gordon. "Our guys determined he was hypothermic. They retrieved him from the water, put him in a hypo- thermia bag and radioed to have Halton paramedics standing by at the pier to transfer the gentle- man to hospital." Gordon said the man was tak- en to hospital, but has since been released. While Gordon said the man was fortunate TOWARF was in the area and able to get him out of the water as quickly as they were, he credits the life-jacket the man was wearing with keeping him alive. "That life-jacket saved his life," said Gordon. The search master empha- sized it is essential residents wear their life-jackets when they go out on the lake, not just take life-jackets with them. He said if you fall into water as cold as Lake Ontario currently is, you won't be able to get a life-jack- et on. "It is important to be wearing it because that is the difference between us finding you and not," said Gordon. He also said residents plan- ning to go out on the lake can stay safe by filing a sail plan and let- ting people know when you are going out and when you expect to return. "That's always important," he said. "That's one of the biggest messages we can get out to peo- ple." TOWARF is a Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit that pro- vides marine search and rescue service. It was started in 1954 by Oak- ville then police chief Fred Oliver in partnership with the local boating community.
