Halton Region Chair Gary Carr signed for the region while Ogimaa R. Stacey Laforme signed on behalf of the MCFN. "Building meaningful relationships with Indige- nous Peoples, Communi- ties and First Nations, in- cluding the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation -- the Treaty Holders of the territory in which Halton Region sits -- is an impor- tant part of Halton's re- sponsibility for Truth and Reconciliation," said Carr. "By signing this rela- tionship agreement, we help ensure that this work continues for years to come and that the relationship is based on cultural under- standing, empathy and re- spect. Chimiigwetch. Thank you to Ogimaa La- forme for your continued support." Laforme noted that the journey of friendship and respect based on treaty re- lations that the two groups have shared will provide the foundation to do good for both peoples. Halton Regional council endorsed the relationship agreement at its June 15 meeting. The relationship agree- ment is intended to help Halton Region and MCFN work toward achieving the shared objectives of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)'s final report and Calls to Action, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN- DRIP). The relationship agree- ment is also intended to be helpful in identifying areas of mutual concern and in- terest, as well as establish- ing and supporting shared understanding and ongo- ing conversations. MCFN has met numer- ous times with regional staff to share their history, culture and heritage. Halton Region's land ac- knowledgment was devel- oped in consultation with MCFN and the MCFN flag is flying permanently at the Halton Regional Cen- tre. Regional staff said these important steps are helping to educate and in- crease cultural knowledge and understanding in the regions' journey of rela- tionship building.
