The town's Planning and Development Council voted during a Monday, July 11 meeting to approve zoning changes to permit the building of the facility, which is currently desig- nated Oakville NE #3 ele- mentary school. The three-storey school will be built within the Mattamy Dunoak sub- division that is under con- struction in the area north of Dundas Street East and east of Eighth Line. The provincial govern- ment announced $20.8 million in funding to build the school back in Decem- ber 2021. The subdivision plan was approved by the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal on June 11, 2019. The Halton District School Board has said the 7,116-square-metre school will be built on a 2.8-hect- are parcel of land. The board also said the school will feature a 700- square-metre daycare centre. When the subdivision is complete, the school will be located at the northeast corner of Wheat Bloom Drive and John McKay Boulevard. There will be 39 class- rooms, 18 portables, 157 parking spaces, six small bus/seven car queuing spaces and 20 bicycle park- ing spaces. In a report to council, town staff noted the school will be able to ac- commodate a maximum of 1,202 students while the daycare will be able to handle a maximum of 88 children. Construction of the school is expected to begin this summer with school expected to open for the 2023-24 school year. The town's director of planning services, Gabriel Charles, said the school development proposal is consistent with local, re- gional, and provincial planning objectives. He also pointed out a new elementary school is greatly needed in the fast- growing north Oakville community. PLANS APPROVED FOR NEW SCHOOL IN NORTH OAKVILLE A rendering of the new school.
