INDEPENDENT LIVING, SUPPORTIVE LIVING AND SHORT TERM STAYS 1459 NOTTINGHILL GATE OAKVILLE 905-469-3232 DELMANOR.COM Halton police are inves- tigating following the theft of two defibrillators from an Oakville sports field. At some point during the overnight hours be- tween Tuesday, July 12 and Wednesday, July 13, some- one entered a clubhouse at a baseball diamond at Cornwall Road Park, po- lice said. The intruder reported- ly stole two defibrillators valued at $2,000 each as well as a small amount of cash. Officers said there were no signs of forced entry and note the door may have been left unlocked. No suspect description is available. The Town's Director of Parks and Open Space Chris Mark said Oakville Little League, which is re- sponsible for the club- house, is working to re- place the defibrillators as quickly as possible. Mark said the theft was perplexing. "You're stealing a de- vice that could save some- one's life. Why someone would do that is really be- yond me," he said. "It's ridiculous. They are there for a reason, in case an emergency arises. For someone to come and steal them ... clearly that's just someone who has no conscience at all." Anyone with informa- tion about this incident is asked to contact Halton police at 905-825-4747 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-TIPS (8477) or www.haltoncrimestopper- s.ca. DEFIBRILLATORS STOLEN FROM SPORTS FIELD DAVID LEA dlea@metroland.com CRIME An Oakville man says he is shocked after an argu- ment about a vehicle speeding on his street end- ed with him allegedly be- ing struck by that vehicle and sent to hospital with serious injuries. Jeff De Luca, 47, said he had just finished mowing the lawn of his Oxford Ave- nue home, in the area of Sixth Line and Upper Mid- dle Road, July 9 at around 7 p.m., when his attention was drawn to a car he al- leged was speeding down the street. "I swear he was doing about 200 km/h," said De Luca. "He slows down to come around the bend and then he starts ham- mering it, going back up the street. My pickup truck was right there so I just stood in the middle of the street and I put my hand up and told him to stop." De Luca said the driver did stop, but not before the vehicle, which De Lu- ca believes was a Volkswa- gen, bumped De Luca's knees. The two men argued with the driver reportedly demanding De Luca get out of the way and De Luca tell- ing the man there were children in the area and not to drive like that. De Luca alleged that af- ter the vehicle's engine was revved a few times, the ve- hicle backed up and then accelerated forward, slam- ming into him. "I hit the bumper, his li- cence plate cut up my shins. I went over his hood and into the windshield," said De Luca. "Then I just went flying in the air. I don't know how high I was but one of the neighbours said I was at least 15 feet in the air. I hit the ground like a ton of bricks. I just couldn't get up and I started to black out." Halton police allege the driver fled the scene, but later returned and was ar- rested. A 19-year-old man from Brampton faces charges of assault with a weapon, ag- gravated assault, danger- ous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and failing to stop after an acci- dent. De Luca was taken to Oakville Trafalgar Memo- rial Hospital with serious injuries, including a con- cussion, a fractured spine, a broken arm, broken ribs, a shattered pelvis and damage to his heart and lungs. He said at this time it is unclear how long it will take for him to recover. "I'm just shocked," said De Luca. "Definitely didn't expect this to happen."
