Two young Oakville vio- linists, who also happen to be sisters, have won gold medals at the Canadian Music Competition in Que- bec City. Yoanna Haeun Jang is a Grade 10 student at Nelson High School in Burlington and won in the 15-year-old strings category with a 96 per cent mark while Hanah Kim Jang is a Grade 5 stu- dent at W.H. Morden Public School in Oakville and took home the gold in the 10- year-old strings category with a 94 per cent mark. They are both students of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists of the Royal Conservatory of Music and study with Conrad Chow. Both girls wanted to thank Chow, their pianists Jeanie Chung (Yoanna) and Younggun Kim (Ha- nah), their supportive fam- ily, friends and school- teachers. Learn more about these two young talented musi- cians below. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING THE VIOLIN? YOANNA: "I have been playing the violin since I was six and a half, so it has been around nine years now. HANAH: "I started playing the violin at age five and a half, so it's been over five years now. After watching a gala concert that Yoanna attended, I was amazed by the performance of both her and the rest of the mu- sicians, so I wanted to start. DO YOU PLAY WITH SCHOOL OR LOCAL ORCHESTRAS? YOANNA: "Sadly, my school does not have a strings program but as I at- tend the RCM Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Acad- emy for Young Artists, I perform as part of the Academy Chamber Or- chestra. I also volunteer as a violin mentor at the Oak- ville Symphony Youth Or- chestra's Sinfonia and I was a concertmaster of the Philharmonia in the past. In addition, I also do volun- teer violin performances at Joseph Brant Hospital and at Tansley Woods Village. HANAH: "Currently, I play in the Junior Chamber Or- chestra of the RCM Phil and Eli Taylor Perfor- mance Academy for Young Artists. Previously, I played in the Oakville Sym- phony Youth Orchestra's Sinfonia for two years. And, I have also performed with my sister a few times as a volunteer. I performed at Joseph Brant Hospital, and recorded a duet for the elderly citizens at Tansley Woods Village." HAVE YOU PARTICIPATED IN THIS COMPETITION BEFORE? YOANNA: "This is my first time competing in the Ca- nadian Music Competition and it was a wonderful ex- perience. I am so happy to have received such a great result." HANAH: "This year was the first time I participated in the Canadian Music Competition. CMC was my first in-person competition since before the pandemic and also my biggest so it was a nervous but exciting experience for me." WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT PLAYING THE VIOLIN? YOANNA: "There are many things I love about playing the violin but I es- pecially enjoy being able to converse in the universal language known as music. It is fascinating to me how deep a connection can form between the audience and the performer using pitch and rhythm among other musical aspects instead of words and sentences." HANAH: "I am usually a shy person, but I have so much confidence on stage. Performing on stage passes by so quickly because it is so fun, and when I'm fin- ished, the adrenalin rush is still there. I also love hear- ing the violin sing -- I can't believe that I am lucky enough to be able to create such a beautiful sound."
