One of the best ways we can achieve our climate goals is to make the switch to electric vehi- cles (EVs). Since 2015, we have invested an historic $1 billion to make EVs more affordable and more accessible for Cana- dians. In 2020, the federal government announced a $295-million investment in Ford Canada to assist with the production of EVs, creating 5,000 good, middle-class jobs right here in Oakville. Throughout EV Week, we have continued to expand upon this work with sev- eral new initiatives to support electric vehicle infrastructure, produc- tion, and chargers. We are building a reli- able nation-wide network of EV charging stations in local communities so that Canadians can get to where they need to go. In Oakville, we are invest- ing $150,000 to install con- nectors and chargers as part of a larger an- nouncement to install 6,000 new EV chargers across the country. To help businesses save money and support Canada's climate goals, we launched the new In- centives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emis- sions Vehicles Program. This program will pro- vide up to $200,000 in in- centives for businesses to help them electrify their fleets, supporting Cana- da's target to have 100 per cent of sales of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles be zero-emission by 2040. In public transit, clean vehicles are the next big step. To accomplish our goal of putting 5,000 elec- tric buses on the road across Canada, we an- nounced the creation of the Zero Emission Tran- sit Fund. This fund will invest $2.75 billion to help com- munities and school bus operators electrify their bus fleets. To position Canada as a key competitor in the global EV market, we are establishing a world- leading facility in Onta- rio to produce essential components of electric vehicle batteries. In part- nership with Umicore, we are investing $1.5 billion to build this facility in Loyalist Township. This will play an es- sential role in our domes- tic electric vehicle supply chain and make for a more resilient North American batteries eco- system. We are committed to doing everything we can to keep our air clean, help people save money on fuel and cars, all while creat- ing jobs, bolstering our auto sector, and position- ing Canada as a global leader in building and powering electric vehi- cles.
