(The following letter is in response to the Oakville Beaver story titled "Town council rejects plans for 9- storey condo.") As a homeowner in the Joshua Creek area, I am always amazed at Oakville council's constant rejec- tions for intensification in the southern portions of Oakville. Meanwhile, the Dundas corridor is seeing rampant condo develop- ment that is already giving rise to significant traffic volume and increasing difficulty in navigating Dundas Street, particular- ly through the rush hour periods. Many of these develop- ments back directly on to townhomes and single- family homes that are clearly in the shadow of these large buildings. How is it OK to place all of your intensification tar- gets in one portion of the town and to constantly re- ject them in another? How is it OK to accept shadow and rush hour traffic arguments in one area of town and to bla- tantly reject them in an- other? The Halton Region 2019-2022 Strategic Business Plan is a reflec- tion of the priorities that matter to the community and has guided our work for this term of council. While faced with the un- precedented COVID-19 emergency, we have made progress on many priori- ties set out in the plan, maintained our essential programs and services, and kept tax rate increases at or below the rate of inflation. Objectives set out in the region's 2019-2022 Strategic Business Plan were identi- fied across five themes. Some of our key achieve- ments in each area include: • Planning and growth management: Housing grew by an additional 15,000 units and established a framework to accommo- date provincial growth tar- gets that minimizes urban boundary expansion through the adoption of Re- gional Official Plan Amendment (ROPA) 48 and 49. • Transportation and in- frastructure: Halton invest- ed more than $900 million in transportation infrastruc- ture and almost $1 billion in water and wastewater in- frastructure since 2019. • Community well-being: New assisted-housing op- portunities were created and we invested approxi- mately $13M through the Halton Region Community Investment Fund. The emergency shelter pro- gram was modified and ex- panded, and the Ontario Se- niors Dental Care Program launched to support low in- come seniors. • Environment and sus- tainability: Declared a cli- mate emergency, we achieved a decrease in cor- porate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a re- duction in heating con- sumption per square foot. • Effective government: Halton achieved the highest credit rating (AAA) each year from independent credit agencies and kept tax rate increases at or below the rate of inflation. In addition to planned priorities, Halton Region al- so had significant responsi- bilities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2020 to 2022. More than 50,000 cases and 176 institutional outbreaks were managed, and the needs of vulnerable resi- dents and those most im- pacted financially and so- cially by the pandemic were supported. Through the co-ordinat- ed delivery of the COVID-19 vaccination program, more than 1.35 million doses have been administered and 89 per cent of residents aged five and up have received at least two doses.
