MAN DEAD, WOMAN INJURED IN OVERNIGHT SHOOTING Halton police forensics on the scene of a homicide investigation that left a man dead and a woman with serious injuries. Graham Paine/Metroland BAMBANG SADEWO bsadewo@metroland.com CRIME ents, Anthony's mood and behaviour started to deteri- orate in his mid 20s. He reportedly quit his job for no apparent reason, stopped any social activi- ties and became increas- ingly agitated and aggres- sive. "He was smoking more cannabis and consuming alcohol daily," reads the board report. "He was yelling and swearing to himself in his room, he was breaking ob- jects, punching walls and became physically aggres- sive to his father, brother and members of the com- munity. This resulted in the police being called on numerous occasions." The board heard that Anthony refused any men- tal health services or treat- ment that was suggested by his parents and in 2016, not feeling safe around him, his parents asked him to leave the home. Since that time, Antho- ny was essentially un- housed, living in shelters or sleeping in his car. The board heard that be- tween 2017 and 2021, Antho- ny was hospitalized five times following aggressive actions, which included threatening a roommate with a knife. In 2021, he was diag- nosed with schizophrenia. After being found not criminally responsible for the March 30, 2021 stabbing, Anthony was remanded to St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton for treatment pending a hearing by the Ontario Review Board. At the recent board hearing, psychiatrist Dr. Khashayar Shariati testi- fied Anthony does not ac- cept he has a long-standing illness and that, if released at this time, he believes An- thony would stop taking his medication and his mental condition would de- teriorate. Shariati noted Anthony is being treated in a secure unit within the hospital and said he would like to see improvement in Antho- ny's insight before consid- ering a move to another unit. The board ultimately concluded Anthony's de- tention at the hospital is necessary and appropriate to protect the public and ensure his rehabilitation.
