The moment those words were spoken, you knew you were in for the tale of a lifetime. The man behind the stories is even larger than the tales he told. Everywhere you go with Clay, he knows someone, knows everyone, or would know everyone by the end of the day. He always enraptured his audience with his life stories. 'That's the vaudeville gene', he reminds us. But draw back the showman's curtain, and you will find a man who loved deeply, and showed it through his service and kindness to everyone around him. Born and raised in Toronto, Clay joined the Canadian Army at 18 and was honoured to serve with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, 1st Battalion. He completed basic training at Currie Barracks in Calgary, and went on to serve in Germany. Since that time he was an active member of the Georgetown Legion, branch 120. Clay moved his young family to Georgetown in 1984, when he helped found Krown Rust Control, remaining a partner in the local shop until his retirement. He spent countless hours volunteering his time in town with the Optimist Club and Salvation Army Church to name only a few. At home, Clay loved his family above all. His greatest achievements in life were his wife and children, and he would tell that to anyone who would listen. He was always there when you needed him most, and doubly when you didn't. His greatest life lessons will never be forgotten: his humility "You should thank me for giving you the best Mother", his courtesy: "Don't forget to offer our guest a drink, oh... now that you're up, I'll have one too" and his craftsmanship: "A blind man would be glad to see that!" Clay is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 47 years, Nancy; his beloved sister Joan; his adored children, Todd (Linda), Michael (Jeannette), Kathleen, Patrick (Michelle), Sherry and Tara; his cherished grandchildren, Hayden, Rhoenin, Emmet, Violet, Aurora, and Sofia; along with a host of loving in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and longtime friends from around the world. Clay is predeceased by his parents Lorne and Dorothy Downes (nee Baker), and his brothers, George and Lawrence. Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be arranged at the Georgetown Legion this summer, pandemic- permitting. Your curtain may have fallen, but you leave behind a legacy that will be shared throughout the ages. Beloved son of Tim and Ellen Phillips. Survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of the family. Predeceased by his grandparents John and Rena Phillips and Joseph and Anna Kukurin, cousin Kelly Westaway, and uncle Boris Tkachuk. Steve was born in Sarnia but lived in Georgetown for thirty years. He was a big Boston Bruins and Toronto Raptors fan. Steve loved his annual hockey trip/vacation with his dad and having family get-togethers. Steve will be remembered as a quiet serious man with a subtle sense of humour that caught you off guard, and had a contagious and mischievous grin. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Kidney Foundation or St. Joseph's Hospice (cheques mailed to the funeral home or made online, please). What would I give to clasp your hand, your happy face to see, to hear your voice and see your smile, that meant so much to me. Always so good, unselfi sh and kind, none on this earth your equal I'll fi nd. Honourable and true in all your ways, loving and faithful to the end of your days, honest and liberal, ever upright, just in your judgment, always right; loved by your friends and all whom you knew, one in a million, that person was you. A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair. You were too pure for this cold earth, too beautiful to stay, and so God's holy angel bore our darling one away. Loving and kind in all your ways, upright and just to the end of your days. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDS OBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE BIRTHDAYSSPECIAL OCCASIONS THANK YOU NOTES OBITUARIES
