Rather than havinga re- strictive approach, I be- lieve a few small additions to your favourite recipes can bring a healthy bal- ance to the holiday treats you love. Here are some of my favourite holiday reci- pe tweaks. MASHED POTATOES The tweak: For people who like to add sour cream or butter to their mashed potatoes, did you know that 0% Greek yogurt works just as well, and tastes just as good? Greek yogurt is a nice substitute, as it's lower in fat and higherin protein. There's also no need tofuri- ously peel off that potato skin! They are a great source of fibre, so leaving them on helps increase the nutrition in your mashed potatoes! You may also con- sider replacing half the po- tatoes with cauliflower. It's high in vitamin C and a great source of folate and KAROLINA OTTO. Column B-vitamins. APPETIZERS The tweak: Appetizers are must-have items at din- ners and gatherings, an they can be hard to resist. With my approach to eat- ing, I say, there's no need to resist; rather, we should be more mindful of the types of appetizers we eat. For ex- ample, opting for a whole grain bread/dinner roll in- stead of white. As for the infamous charcuterie boards, fruits, nuts and veggies are key here. Consider adding apricots, berries and dates to up the nutrition on your board d y're deli cious, too! When itcomes to vegetables, sliced bell pep- rs, carrots and cucum- ber sticks are great hand- held items that are easy to grab and can offer added nutritional value. PASTA AND CASSEROLES The tweak: Pasta and casseroles are also popular winter food items. With so many different recipes out there, there are many ways to enjoy these dishes in a more balanced way. You can play around with the ingredients to boost the nu- tritional value and give your dish a great new twist of flavour. To help reduce the saturated fat, I recom- mend using low-fat cheeses with 2% milk fatorless. For the noodles, whole grain noodles are great and help to increase the fibre. Don't shy away from the veggies. like shrooms, carrots can increase the nutrition in your recipe and give it a new, but same great taste.
