VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 THE ACTON MONTHLY PAGE7 Light Up the Hills returns making Holiday Season ‘Merry & Bright’ Light Up The Hills is making a return to Acton and Halton Hills this holiday season. Started in December 2008, Light Up the Hills (LTH) has been making the community all ‘Merry & Bright’ with locations set up across Halton Hills, in Acton, Georgetown and Glen Williams. According to Marilyn Sargeantson, of LTH, it’s a massive undertaking that has an annual budget of $70,000 per year, with all costs covered by donations and services-in-kind. “The Town of Halton Hills lets us use the parks, but we have stipulations that we have to follow. Like we have to buy the insurance, we have to do all the infrastructure, we have to look after everything that we use. So, it’s really done through the community and it’s done through donations, sponsorships, and services-in-kind which is South- Western Hydro putting some lights up.” Along with donations and sponsorships, Sargeantson says money raised to put on the light displays also comes from a raffle and through the purchasing of a Christmas ball ornament in memory of someone that has passed. December 1st and will remain on nightly until January 3rd, from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM. There is no charge to attend any of the light displays and no reservation is required. To make a donation, to become a volunteer or for more information on Light Up The ills, you can visit their website at lightupthehills.com. While raising money is one of the main challenges that the committee faces, Sargeantson says recruiting volunteers is vital to the success of LTH. “We really need volunteers. We pay a professional to put on the big lights and big displays... so then, the volunteers put all the lights on all the other trees in the parks. Then when the lights are on the trees, we need. volunteers to walk the parks to make sure everything is working okay. So, all these things take volunteers.” The light displays at the Sports Park in Acton, Dominion Gardens in Georgetown, and Shelagh Law Park in Glen Williams will be lit starting Downtown ACTON It’s Worth the Drive!
