Pet patter Peak flea season approaching . By Ross Pezzack D.V.M. With the onset of summer we are now approaching the peak of the flea season on our pets and in our homes. Early detection, treatment and prevention of fleas can often save both you and your pet from a lot of discomfort later in the sum- mer and fall. If your pet has rapidly moving dark insects on his body, they are almost certainly fleas. They can be ‘best visualized by parting the coat over the base of the tail and on the abdomen. According to most researchers fleas spend less than 10% oftheir life on your pet, the rest is in their (and your) environ- ment. Hence some infested pets may not have any fleas on them at the time you check them, rather the only evidence will be the flea’s small dark bowel movement (flea dirt) seen in your pet’s fur or where they have been lying. This can be distinguished form ordinary dirt by placing it on a wet white tissue and observing for the development of a characteristic red-brown color on the tissue. The key to the treatment of fleas involves treatment of both your pets and their environment for a suffi- cient period of time to kill them in their susceptible life stages (i.e., when they are either larvae or adults). Because fleas are resistant to treatment when they are eggs and pupae, the most effective flea prod- ucts are made of time released insecticides that persist safely on your pet or in your house so that they are active when the fleas become adults or larvae. These products should be reapplied ads directed (one household spray need only be applied every 6-7 month). Flea collars, flea shampoos, brew- er’s yeast and oral insecticides can be used in the prevention of fleas, but scientific studies indicate that they are not reliable asthe sole method of treatment. Some pets may be allergic to flea saliva such that only one bite can cause severe scratching and skin damage. In these cases simply treat- ing for fleas may not relieve your pet, but rather veterinary treatment may be required for the allergy. At this time of year some people who have had flea problems in the past or whose pets are allergic to the saliva may wish to preventative- ly spray their house, cottage and pet over the next few months. In the case of premise sprays, this may ay only one application of time leased products. Rocyanel 's particular situation is somewhat unique and therefore if you have any questions or concerns I would suggest you contact your local veterinarian for more com- plete information.
