Men’s flag football down to final two By Colin Gibson Dawgs and Longhorns posted semifinal playoff wins over Plus Welding and Meznic Electric, respectively, Sunday at Nelsons Field to advance to the Georgetown Men’s Flag Football championship game slated for this Sunday, 9:30 a.m. again at Nelsons field. Longhorns shook off a first half slumber to cruise comfortably past Plus Welding 23-8, while fate and a confident determination saw Dawgs down Meznic 30-24. It’s fitting, in a sense, that Dawgs and Longhorns should meet for all the marbles as the 1992 GMFFL winds down. Dawgs are the defending league champion (having won the title the past two seasons) ironically, dethroning the Sigs as cham- pion along the Longhorns Goud dearly love to reclaim the championship silver- ware and are undefeated thus far in both regular and season playoff action. EEEEEE The GMFFL has not scheduled an awards dance to top off the 1992 season. Instead, an informal “awards get-together” is planned for this Sunday, 1 p.m. at the McGibbon Hotel. Further informa- tion can be obtained either from league executive members or from team reps. Longhorn 23 Plus Welding 8 Give the plucky Plus Welding squad A for effort in their swan song season eal loss to unde- feated Longhorn: Outmanned toa outgunned, the Welding crew came up with a gritty defensive display that had the ‘Horns offense off-balance most of e game. Unfortunately, held an unimpres- sive 12-0 lead at the half, courtesy of touchdowns by Paul Allison and Bob Davey. Allison was the man-of-the- match for the winners counting another major in the second half and making crucial catches at criti- cal times for the “Horns. A two-point convert by Bill Taylor (on Allisons TD) and a field goal by Dave Patterson had the Longhorns in front 23-0 before Plus Welding counted their face-saving oints. Throughout the first half, Plus Welding pivot, Shawn McQuarrie, couldn’t seem to get in sync with his receivers. Dropped passes and slightly off the mark toss plagued the offense. Paul Sargent took over the helm in the second half, with only slight- ly better results. In the dying minutes of the game, he hit Greg Lawr with a touchdown, pass then found McQuarrie for a two-point convert. Dawgs 30 Meznic Electric 24 This was a game there for the taking by Meznic, but the knockout punch just never materialized. A second half interception and a freak play off a short kickoff, shunted the disgruntled blue-and- whit squad out of the league cham- pionship picture once again. e game was well worth much more than the admission price — no charge. Meznic was clearly pumped as the game got underway, while the Dawgs were strangely subdued. “We knew what we had to do, have confidence in ourselves, and went out and got the job done,” John eee Dawgs quarterback said after the Menie had finished second over ular season, with the Dawgs nip- ping at their heels in third place. To the surprise of quite a number of onlookers, Meznic jumped out to a 14-0 lead, behind a calm Hal Hulme at pivot, and headed for the sidelines at half with a seemingly comfortable 17-8 leading edge. Howie Hulme and Rob Spiteri scored the Meznic first half majors, with Ken Lockwood kicking two converts and adding a field goal. Al Pelland hauled in a touch- wn pass from Egan, while Linus Stasiulis latched on to a two-point convert toss for the Dawgs first half points. The tide began to turn in the Dawgs’ favor. For some unknown reason, Meznic quarterback Hulme decided to tempt the fates by going long instead of using the 10 and 12-yard tosses which had worked so well in the first half. Dropped balls’ and missed receivers resulted, then Dawgs Dan Reynolds plucked an interception. The Dawgs turned this miscue into a touchdown by Terry Enman and the score now read 17-14 for Meznic. Meznic regrouped to go in front 24-14 when Hulme galloped in from 22 yards for a touchdown (converted by Ken Lockwood), but there was a sense of uneasiness in the Meznic camp. Confidence seemed to have been replaced by a wish just to survive.
